i'm in love with a ripper

if you weren't at the empty bottle last night, you missed one helluva dance party. yacht always brings their a-game, but last night was especially retarded. love these two. they brought on bobby birdman and a drummer to back em up in lieu of their typical av projection and drum machine synth get up. dancing. drinking. dancing and way more drinking. what other venue can you get a pint of bells and a shot of whiskey on a sat night for $5.50? and what other show will rock mad crazy dance moves. i got a bunch of vids too, but drunken jodi is SHOUTING the words to all the songs, so to spare myself mad embarassment i'm opting to keep them off youtube this time around. i really hope these dudes rock sxsw this year. soooo much fun dot com.

for realzies.

missin' my momz

being sick + unemployed + having no energy = suck. not being able to call my mom up and receive her mommy comfort = more suck. but how can i tell her about the job situation? she'll just freak out. can't freak out my momz, i'm "the rock." the stable one. can't let her down. so instead, i'm lying in bed - worrying myself sick with this neverending hacking cough. sometimes, i just really miss the simpler days. where i wore a red velvet jumper and could still fit on my mom's lap. and jamie had a wicked 80's hair-do. and i still loved the taste of syrupy dimetap. some of my fondest memories were as a little girl, falling asleep with my head on my mom's lap as she'd crochet and i'd drift into slumberland with the rotation of her arms, swaying me into a trance. waking up drowsily as she would carry me draped on her shoulder,  into my room and tuck me in. if i was sick, having her pet my hair and place a warm/cold washcloth on my head, telling me everything will be ok. and actually, believing her. why do we have to ever grow up? i wanna barf all over my germs. teach them a g'damn lesson for messing with the wrong broad.

soundtrack to unemployment : my new obsession vol. 1

Ok, so yeah, I'm prob milking this not working thing to death but whatever. As you're all aware, I'ma try to focus more on music related shit until it's time to get off my extended vacation and get back to work. While I actually have been pretty content with recent musical finds as of late (hello phantogram!), I'm in the mood to revisit and discover some older traxx I prob should have dug up years ago. And the past few weeks I finally decided to flirt with the smidgeon of a handful of siouxsie & the banshees tracks on my ipod - while I only had a few, (face to face, happy house, peek-a-boo, hong kong garden), it was enough to get me smitten.

i'm almost kind of ashamed i never really knew what this british 80's post-punk/new wave/gothic staple was all about. apparently they started out obsessed with what the sex pistols had going on and even recruited sid vicious to temporarily join their outfit with a later on/off obsession of outspoken fan, robert smith of the cure. i've read in interview and interview, time and time again, that pretty much anyone who is or has been relevant in the music scene has been somehow inspired by this group, (i.e. lcd soundsystem, santigold, massive attack, tricky, the smiths, garbage, jeff buckley, radiohead, the list goes on and on). . .

but still. never really paid much attention. i remember, (albeit vaguely), my first actual exposure to this goth-pop orchestral dancey soundtrack. i was at some party of a friend of a friend last winter. i knew maybe 3 people in this apartment packed full of pretentious drunk hipsters. it was a kinda depressing time for me and i wasn't really in the mood to be at this american apparel hellhouse. but when i went into the bathroom, there was a casette player atop of the toilet tank, playing a scratchy, warped casette tape. i remember being cranky and pretty damn drunk and thinking, wait - what is this. glancing at the tape, reading siouxsie & the banshees and thinking, 'go figure, damn hipsters, just jonesin' for some indie cred." despite enjoying the 45 or so seconds it took me to drunkenly urinate, i vowed to get the hell out of the house and forgot all about it.

damn. now that i've gotten a taste, i can't get enough. i've downloaded '83's nocturna (which i think is a live album), '84's hyaena and just purchased one of several greatest hits' comps, 92's collection twice upon a time.

now i think its time for me to apply some heavy ass black eyeliner, douse my head in a can of aquanet, tear up some fish net stockings and go brood into my own reflection in the dark. goddamn, i love the 80's. next up i hope to reignite my angst/passion for the cure and stumble upon any additional 80's noisepop post-new wave delectables or perhaps educate myself on some late 70's punk.

here's to uncle sam footin' the bill.

Why is it that Thurs SXSW edition is always the tuffest?

Bah, so apparently mob, schubas/lincoln hall, death + taxes, fader fort and filter are all competing on thursday. filter/fader no biggie, they're e'ryday. but shit, check out this line-up: http://filtermagazine.com/index.php/rsvp/sxsw/ Thursday's obvs where it's at - Minus the Bear, Uffie and Miike Snow? shit girl shit. life can be so hard sometimes. . .

check out my khaki dick!!!!!

it's official. i do NOT understand fashion. some wackjob (pun intended, har har), fashion designer by the name of isabel mastache debuted these "slacks" at madrid's fall/winter 2010 fashion week. i think i'd prefer my man to just let it all hang out naturally and save the scratch that would be spent on these pantalones on buying me some pizza. but that's just me.

T minus 24 Days

until texass. i just wrote down all the names of old/new friends alike who i'll be kickin it with and this year is holy crap crew for sure. i'll know something like 15 close homies, it's gonna be the bestest. to get in the spirit of thangs, I just killed some time viewing some of my youtube vids from last year. i forgot how many stellar acts i caught and how good the vid ops are at fader fort day parties. i think it's hilarious i have damn near 2,000 hits from my shaky shitty kanye vid of love lockdown. man, i love ye.

but damn, will this year hold a candle to last year's highlights? i mean, i can't say i found too much new stuff other than miss janelle monae - but a brief taste of what i did catch. . .

cursive
amanda palmer, again, & again (covering radiohead, on ukelele, even)
we have band (we have forgotten, already)
pains of being pure at heart (wow. dance moves, dude.)
handsome furs (love love love them)
wavves (this kid is such a gabie brat)
natalie portman's shaved head (hey, after several complimentary budweiser tallboys, you can pretty much get down to anything)

so this year. . . i'm looking forward to the fader fort, again, obvs. lincol hall/schuba's is showcasing a pretty solid chicago set with hood internet, sharon von etten (who i caught opening for final fantasy/owen pallett a month or so back), and a few others. muzzle of bees has a day time gig with peter wolf criier and some others i can't seem to recollect at the moment. death + taxes has a decent line-up, i wanna say the japandroids are headlining. . . terrorbird + forcefield pr has got a stellar day party with neon indian representing amongst others. and there's still hella events not announced yet; crazy how it all comes out at the last minute.

whatever happens, i'm sure a week in sunshine with fists full of shiner bock and hannah montanna notebooks will do me good. bat caves. dalmations. girlfrands. forget about this unemployment shit and just focus on some mad new beats.

3 weeks and counting. . .

Jodi + St. Vincent = Star Crossed Lovers

I almost feel like St. Vincent and I are some pair of star crossed lovers. That might be pushing it a bit, but the past 3-4 times I’ve tried to see her live, something or another has prevented it last minute from coming to fruition. Used to the disappointment, I was a bit on the skeptical side so I wouldn’t get my hopes up when I got confirmation for her Thursday night at the Metro.  Well, sweetheart, I’m pretty sure after last night, we are meant to be. Along with several others in the sold-out full house Chicago venue, I finally had my Annie Clark rite of passage--and I gotta say, I had severely underestimated what this mighty songbird guitaress rock star is capable of.

Unsure what to expect, I wound up getting in just as St. Vincent had kicked the set off around the 10:00 PM mark. It was as if I had walked into a lush, sweet dream sequence twisted with honey dripped madness – the band was in full throttle, in the midst of “Save Me from What I Want,” with a gorgeous Miss Clark slyly seducing the mic. The next hour passed in an incredible whirlwind – Clark is definitely more than a pretty face with a nice set of lungs – the girl can wail on her guitar and she owns the stage. Even with her petite feminine frame and full head of curls, Clark makes rocking look simple  with her adorable stage banter and walking in place, strutting dance moves.  The orchestration of the back-up band was downright jaw dropping; from the variety of chimes, keys and light percussion to the smooth sounds of sax, the light flute and clarinet melodies, dreamy violins and of course, heavy guitar work and molasses-coated harmonic vocals, I felt as if I had stumbled into a twisted, party dimension from Alice in Wonderland.

Clark and co. primarily showcased several tracks from “Actor,” along with a handful of “Marry Me” numbers as well. Perhaps the highlight of the evening, however, was Clark’s adorable spoken interpretation of Ice Cube  – “I mean, how nice is it to have someone cook you breakfast?,” she joked – “You don’t get your car jacked either – I feel like that happened a lot in the 90’s – wait do carjacking still happen? Things to think about after the show, maybe not with the mic.” Charisma at its best, Clark continued to woo the crowd with her simple humor, “He wins at dominos and craps, then meets a girl he bones, smokes hydro and gets drunk – When I say this aloud, it’s not as romantic as I thought. . .” Half expecting her to start into some folksy rendition of “It was a Good Day,” I was not let down in the least when she instead led into her “folky, melancholy analog to Ice Cube,” – a cover of Jackson Browne’s “These Days.” Eloquent and heartwarming, girl killed it.

Closing her sweet one-night affair with Chicago, whom she reflected upon saying multiple times how nice it was to be back playing, after having “spent many nights here doing terrible things, so it’s nice to do constructive things . . . for the planet,” Clark concluded the set with a 2-song encore with a solo rendition of Marry Me’s “Paris is Burning” and the band, backed-up, “Your Lips are Red.” Every detail, from the Metro’s sharp acoustics, quality of sound, and warm, red/blue and green/violet lighting and overall energy contributed to what I believe may be one of 2010’s top stellar performances. Until you see St. Vincent live, you may never know Miss Clark’s full musical capabilities – while her recordings are beautiful and melodic, her live performances are pure majesty, magnified tenfold.

where is my wallet? :: i heart sell-outs

so yeah. if it weren't for selling out, i'da never seen my fave band ever the pixies. since they pretty much hate each other and broke up in the early 90's, i figured seeing them live would be as likely as a nirvana tour. however, frank black listens when money talks, and even though he blatantly admits that it's all about the "fucking money" and not about the "artsy fartsy," i don't care. he was interviewed saying that yeah, surfer rosa and cmon pilgrim tours could be a possibility if the promoters set it up.

well after catching their initial reunion tour in 2005 and the doolittle tour this past november, i say to you frank black or black francis or whoever the hell you wanna be referred to as - YES PLEASE. can you even imagine??? doolittle's great and all, don't get me wrong - but surfer rosa is my IT album. i mean, seriously. . . just imagine:

1. bone machine (YOU TRY TO MOLEST ME IN THE PARKING LOT. YUP, YUP YUP YUP)
2. break my body
3. something against you
4. broken face
5. gigantic
6. river euphrates
7. where is my mind? (my bro would dig this one)
8. cactus
9. tony's theme (channelling miss tessa hernandez - THIS IS A SONG ABOUT A SUPERHERO NAMED TONY, IT'S CALLED TONY'S THEME)
10. oh my golly!
11. vamos
12. i'm amazed
13. brick is red

. . . and then i would die and go to heaven. or hell. or that place religious people believe in when your soul is in turmoil and you're just floating around all confused and stuff. i wouldn't care, because i'd have seen surfer rosa. i really like the pixies. reminds me of a simpler time. . . when i was 18 in the all-girl dorm, parker hall (virgin vault, four floors of whores, etc), living down the hall from quinn & tessa and snacking on tessa's wheat thins, bouncing around to bone machine with fight club playing in the background. elimidate. calling boys creepy. being mega radiostars. the football house. strolling in the woods. runs to hudson taco bell.

ahhh. nostalgia. the pixies. friends.

here's to selling out.

Phantogram - Schuba's, Chicago - 2/17/10 (The day I got laid off)

If members of The xx, Metric and The Kills managed to produce some form of love child, (or children, rather), in a hot, musical orgy, the final result would sound a lot like Phantogram. This Saratoga Springs native outfit first came across my radar this past October at CMJ. The 30 or so minutes I had spent in a random bar basement checking this sexy, sultry synth pop duo stood out as the most impressionable find in my week long NYC adventure and I knew this shit was about to blow up. Fast forward to last night, where I joined a mass pack of friends and other eager fans at Schuba’s to find my prediction to have come more than true.

Opening up the night was Illegal Art’s Junk Culture, who typically presents as a two-man outfit, but was missing his drummer due to “getting married, which is a pretty good excuse,” as Deepak Mantena explained to the crowd. My first time hearing Junk Culture, it was pretty decent for having to pull off as a one-man show. Homey leapt around behind his synth set up, at one point even jumping into and around the crowd like a sweaty, mad, animal outta the cage. The set was very Animal Collective-esque, and you could totally tell he shares his label residence with Girl Talk with all his dancey influences. Even though JC may not have the reason I was there, I gotta give credit to Mantena for his enthusiasm and energy – at one point he even led the crowd into a Happy Birthday sing-a-long for Sarah, (who, I’m assuming is the same Sarah as Phantogram) and other members of the audience who drunkenly shouted their way into inclusion (thanks Caroline, but it was NOT my birthday). All in all, it was a decent warm-up for what was about to come.

Around 10:20, Josh Carter and Sarah Barthel approached the dark, intimate stage illuminated by strobe effects and an intense audiovisual backdrop of city scenes. Murmurs of eager anticipation floated amongst the enveloped crowd, “This is gonna be so good,” and more than a handful of “Oh my god’s!” built and eventually ceased as the club exploded with bass, combustive guitar action and mad synth work. The next forty-five or so minutes of the set passed like a dream – the sound was top notch and the chemistry between Carter and Barthel was undeniable. Barthel seemed to channel a lush vocal style similar to Emily Haines, which complimented the sultry and sexy contributions of her partner.

The AV presentation transitioning from city night life to country fields took the audience on a secret journey into a digital underground of pulsing bass, electrified guitar, entrancing synth work and sexy vocals. Their hypnotic, pounding, electronic lullabies lulled the crowd into a deep trance – subconsciously getting everyone to move in unison, while being both mesmerizing and unforgettable at the same time. The transition from track to track in the set was seamless, and the coordinating black rockstar uniform sporting duo owned the night. I can honestly say that I have not enjoyed a show to this extent in quite some time. For only two people, they sure made a helluva loud sound. Dark, dancey glam pop at its very best – Phantogram is going to own 2010.

What About Your Frieeeeends?

oh my god. dudes. i am one of the luckiest girls in the world. i am surrounded by genuine, awesome, supportive people in my life. and i am so grateful, so thanks, dudes.

for those of you who haven't heard da' werd yet, i got laid off yesterday. it was my 3-year mark in january - where i was wasting away in corporate america, as an account supervisor for a communication event planning company. it was far from my dream job, but despite my lack of passion, it was tolerable and not too bad of a gig. decent salary, benefits, met some great people. but, of course, the company was hit with a new VP and "restructuring plan," which resulted in me and a few others being laid off.

it happens.

i'm being extremely positive about the entire situation now though. i realize with the help of uncle sam and a devoted job hunt, i'll be on my own two feet again in no time. but first - i'm going to take the next month for some much needed self reflection, re-evaluation of what i am passionate about, and figure out some sort of life path. re-charge my batteries, if you will.

i'm going to write, dudes. i'm going to network. apply for some internships at local venues. introduce myself to people in the chicago music scene. get out there! i've got a good start, already know some pretty good folks in the scene. focus on reviews. revamp my resume. pursue my passion! sxsw will be a great networking experience, im feeling good about it. if, after, my 30-something day plan, i'm still where i'm at today, i'll rejoin my fellow corporate bees and get a day job. but who knows? i think this will be great for me mentally. if i don't land a job at a venue or as a writer, fine. there's no shame in bartending or serving for a bit. meet some new folk, get a job where i don't sit on my ass for 9 consecutive hours. help me get back to my ideal physical shape, mental state, you know - be happy?

i'm excited. for reals. sometimes it takes involuntary action to get where you need to be. i got laid off, ok, that sucks. but now i have this opportunity to really do what i want whereas i wouldn't have had the guts before.

and plus, i have excellent friends. last night all my peeps joined me at a spectacular concert at one of my fave venues. phantogram was incredible, and it was amazing being with everyone. getting laid off = pity free drinks! everyone was so compassionate and supportive. drinks were had. dancing commenced. hugs and high fives. lots of supportive text messages. i just can't thank you all enough. i love you all so much. thanks for helping me  start my new life. i'm pretty excited. . . friends, family, a great boyfriend, a cuddly kitty, and now finally - i can focus on what i WANT in life and deserve.

there, that's my sappy segment for the day. stay tuned for updates on jodi life path in the near future. . .

the most sexual (im)mature 12 year old white girl from wiso that was

so the other night i was havin some brews with some peeps at liar's club. cheap drinks, good friends, rad tunes. with a bit of a pbr induced buzz creeping on, i found myself belting out the words to several 90's rhymes. i guess i didn't realize until recently that i had it hard for salt n' peppa. mariah carey. boyz 2 men. montell jordan. whatever, just pure, unapologetic girl i be lovin you 90's pop. what concerns me, though, is that as my mom blindly purchased me whatever cassette tape i desired, without either one of us paying any attention to what i was so blatantly rockin out to in my bedroom.

sure, albums like ace of base's 'the sign,' or sugar ray's 'floored,' were innocent enough. the bodyguard soundtrack, fine. but the biggest hits that i really dove into may have had some more mature content in their lyrics than i realized. i remember 4th grade, when we had "bring your fave music into class" day in our music class, what tape did i bring? oh bobby brown, but of course. i'll never forget the look of horror on mrs. bowman's face when she asked which track i was requesting, "humpin around." "no jodi, we can't play that here." i didn't get it, what was wrong? wasn't that the hip dance jam of 1992? what was her deal? now i listen back, and not only was that song an earbleeding travesty, but it promotes the importance of not "humpin around," damn - it shoulda been the other way around, sexual liberty and such. fuck monotany.

i remember being 11, when the cool thing in 6th grade was to rollerblade in circles on the new outdoor basketball court outside my elementary school at recess. all the cool kids had blades, they were the fad. i was probably the only nerd who's mom made her bring knee pads to school, but i just threw that shit aside. i wasn't no square. full mullet, big goggles, hotpink stretch pants and goose or teddybear t-shirt, i rocked the coolest fashions and had my cassette tape walkman strapped to my waist. sometimes one of the more popular kids would bring their convertable cd player outside, where we would all skate in unison to the likes of salt-n-peppa's "very unnecessary." i love love love that i have every word memorized from that album, down to the aids psa at the end of the cd. that and tlc's "crazy sexy cool," i knew everything there was to know about sexin, from red light specials to what to find in a real man, this is how they did it -- and pondered the real importancies in life, like, i wanna know - how does it hang?

bib overalls were all the rage, as i recollect.

i remember in 6th grade there was this girl with a wicked sweet perm. her name was ariel. she had the hotts big time for aaron harris. i don't know why i know this 15 or so odd years later, but whatever. one day ariel brought in a bunch of condoms to school. it amazed the entire 6th grade class. she had multi-colored condoms, flavored, themed, everything. i think this was her way of making herself available for aaron harris. i'm not sure. it really creeped me out. but regardless, my friend ryan and i snatched a handful of them and proceeded to have one helluva balloon volleyball party in my backyard after school. we were cool like that. i vaguely remember sampling a banana condom and thinking to myself, well that wasn't really all that tasty.

around 7th grade one of my former girlfriends had started seeing boys. i remember it was such a controversey, big hush hush secret that my friends wanted to keep private from me particularly, but the girl had started "getting fingered." the one girl who spilled the beans to me swore me to privacy, but at the same time, agreed to call said fingered girl on a third line and let me listen to their conversation as she milked it out of fingered girl to give details. rumor had it, she then had sex with her boyfriend and her other friend/boyfriend on the same bed. in 8th grade. gross, right? at this point, i decided pretending to skateboard was cooler than fingerbanging and rollerskating and somewhat divorced those friends. they were pretty big bitches to me on the cheerleading squad too - i remember overhearing finger girl hiss "just wait til i drop her from the top of the pyramid," ouch.

even though i had every sexual verse in top 40 history memorized at this time in my life, the idea of seeing, yet alone touching, a penis terrified me. that was just not for me. i couldn't even get a boy to hold my hand, let alone put a tongue in my mouth. but still, i would croon along to "ill make love to you" and "i wanna sex you up" like it was nothing. my mom probably thought i was super cool. no wonder she blindly made a "physcial" secret dr appointment for me at age 15, without the slightest warning of her sabotage planned first pap smear. "why do i need to undress????" "oh, your mom didn't tell you? this is a gyno visit, jodi. you're going on the pill today." "what pill???" "birth control." "what's that??"

must have been all that salt n peppa. hmmmm.

oh well, it all came full circle. i eventually learned the lessons of love and am no longer terrified to let a boy insert his tongue in my mouth. and really, i'm the winner here. i can now go out to hipster bars and drunkenly belt out all the words to "none of your business" without a skip in the beat. i'm a real hit, g's.

keep it hood

a friend of mine asked me to contribute a chi-centric piece for his zine recently, i managed to nab the hood internet to share some updates on recent works in a brief interview. not sure when the publication will be pressed, but i'll make sure to share any links or hard copies when they're available for those of you interested. it's an original interview for the mag, something a part from my typical muzzle of bees works, but i don't think homie will mind if i throw it up on here since only a handful of my beloveds actually check my ramblings here. i think it's a pretty well-read q&a though, so for those of ya'll who share yer love with me for all things hood, check it out below.

You dudes have been at the mash-up game for almost three years now, how do you feel about where you’re at today compared to the post that started it all, “Rock Yo Sea Legs,” (The Shins + Crime Mob)? What have been some of your favorite Hood tracks to date? Did you ever see this leading to nation-wide tours and major music festivals?

STV SLV: We had no idea it would ever get to the level it's at now. When we started making tracks and posting them up the website, it was basically something we thought our friends and some random visitors would come across. The success of it has totally encouraged us to work harder at it, and along the way I think we have made some pretty awesome tracks. ABX's Trillville x The Knife, R. Kelly x Broken Social Scene, Dead Prez x Grizzly Bear are all some of my favorites.

You’ve been on the road a lot more as of late, with several upcoming shows both regionally and on the west coast. What are some of your more memorable sets? Any specific dates that you’re particularly eager to play? Do you have any details on your upcoming SXSW sets?

ABX: We played some awesome summer festivals this past summer. Lollapalooza crowd was crazy and we had a giant computer on stage with us. We played the Silent Disco at Bonnaroo where people wear headphones to listen to our set and dance which was a lot of fun and pretty hilarious if you're not wearing headphones. SXSW this year is still taking shape. Should be doing a bunch of stuff there.

How would you compare performing on the road versus the scene here in Chicago? There’s a solid overall music scene here in the Windy City, particularly on the dance party/hip hop front, who would you recommend our readers keep on their radar?

ABX: Chicago is definitely playing to the home crowd and always great. But we've been getting really good crowds of Hood fans all over the place. Being mostly internet-based definitely helps our reach.

I loved how The Hood vs. Chicago showcased several established Chi artists such as R. Kelly, Kanye, Lupe and Common, yet showed love for more up-and-comers such as Yea Big + Kid Static, Dude N Nem and Hollywood Holt. If you had a chance to do it again would there be any others you’d include the next go-around?

STV SLV: So many good things happening in Chicago right now. Off the top I'd say: BBU, Mikkey Halsted, Pugs Atomz, Que B.I.L.L.A.H., Drea, Reno Chinati, Freddie Gibbs (Gary IN is pretty close to Chicago), John James from Da Phedz, Tight Phantomz, Vacations, Smith Westerns, Skybox, CAVE, Warhammer 48k, My Gold Mask, SHAPERS, Post Honeymoon, Moneypenny, Driftless Pony Club, Coupleskate, Bird Names, Pool Of Frogs, Old Fake, Lasers & Fast & Shit, Bear The Bell...

Speaking of Chicago based projects, I caught word of a collaborative effort of local video performance artists who are working on a mad workout video. Word on the street is you’ll be assisting with the score, what can you tell us about this project?

STV SLV: Nothing right now. TOP SECRET.

Keeping things locally, what are some of your fave nightlife digs? Venues, bars, eats?

STV SLV: Some of my favorite bars in the area are Club Foot, California Clipper, and Hungry Brain. Food: Hot Doug's, Nightwood, Avec. Venues: Metro/Smart Bar, Hideout, and the brand new Lincoln Hall.

I know you two started the Hood Internet while you played together in May or May Not a few years back, can you talk to any additional current musical projects you’ve been working on?

ABX: For me it's just The Hood Internet right now. STV and some of the other former May Or May Not members are in SHAPERS. I have one of their songs on my alarm clock. I finally got to see them live opening for Atlas Sound and they were great.

Back in June of ’08, you posted the Estelle/Kanye +Ting Tings track, “Shut Up, American Boy.” Fast forward to the 2009 Brit Awards in February where we witnessed this magic come to life on stage – was this something that ya’ll played a part in? Or was this just a case of mad telepathy action? That must have been pretty huge to check, what were your initial reactions to the event?

STV SLV: We had nothing to do with this... as far as I know. Though a few years prior at the Brit Awards, Kylie Minogue performed the already-existing Erol Alkan mix of "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" with New Order "Blue Monday." So if at this year's awards they have Kid Cudi performing with Sunn O))), we'll know something's up.

I hear you’re working on an actual forthcoming album, vs. your typical mixtape – got any deets on what’s in store or when fans can expect a sneak peak? Would this be a live collaborative kinda format or more mash-up material? Any top secret special cameos? When do you anticipate this project coming to fruition?

ABX: Can't give any details as it's still pretty early in the process. It won't be mash-ups, but all original production where we get a bunch of people to contribute pieces of tracks and piece it build it from there. As for a timeline, this will come out some time in the future.

I know personally, I have you two to thank for my long overdue affair/discovery of hip hop. Coming from southern Wisconsin, I definitely did not have the exposure or appreciation for the likes of Lil Wayne, Clipse or Ghostface—but thanks to ya’ll throwing that noise on top of the likes of Go! Team and Modest Mouse, I stumbled upon some of the greatest classic and new artists in the rap and even mainstream pop game I never normally would have. Do you think the art of mash-ups and djs in general have made it acceptable for kids today and members of the indie scene to listen to music they normally wouldn’t have?

STV SLV: I'd say the fact that a music fan like yourself got turned on to hip hop via The Hood Internet is a testament to the notion that mashups can help to inform people about music they weren't yet aware of. Once in a while we'll get a comment on our website or someone at a show will talk to us, basically saying "I had never heard of ______ but since you guys mixed it with ______ I decided to check it out and now I'm a really big fan." Obviously we're not reinventing the wheel here, but in the eternal scheme of more people appreciating different kinds of art/music, I feel that's a good forward step.

Two years ago, my first submission for my good pal Ryan's super rad music site, Muzzle of Bees, was an interview with the hood. So thanks to DJ STV SLV, ABX and Ryan for helping me get my foot back in the music journalism biz. For realz. You can read that shit hurrr.

Happy Valentine's Day, Ya'll

so it's valentine's day. day for all the jaded loveless to post haterade rants on their facebook walls.all the lonely lovers to wallow in pity with a pint of ben and jerry's. all the lovesick couples to boast their undying affections with flowers in the office or I LOVE YOU BABY'S! on their social networking sites. all the overpriced dinners, candies and overpolished hallmark cards to profess their coporated emotions.

me? i'm spending it the best way possible. called up my mom to tell her i love her, had a nice chat. threw on a hot pot of extra dark bolivian blend, got me all caffeinated and motivated to get the needed house chores complete. got my number one valentine, miss molly curled up on my lap, a-purrin' up a storm. my boo really loves me, makes me feel pretty darned warm and happy.

now, i'm just dancing around my apartment to my valentine's day mad mixxx. (singing my goddamn guts out). if yew were lucky, you may have copped one of my hand crafted valentine cds - if you didn't, i'm sorry i ran out of glitter glue and construction paper, didn't think it'd be fair to jip anyone on the full exxxperience. i would be more than happy to burn you a copy sans 8 year old girl arts & crafts project cd cover. . .

i think i need to make this project an annual thang, though. just listening to it myself makes me pretty happy.

Monsters : The Reality of Innocence

my cousin and i didn't come from money. we didn't live in what you could call a city, or even really a town. we lived in trailers and houses where the roofs rotted into your porch. "critters" lived in our basements/attics/crawl spaces. villages. of alcohol, drugs and simple times. culture? nope. we did have some bible bangers, though.

we lived about 45 minutes apart, but i remember all my fondest recollections of childhood were shared with staci. about 10 months apart in age, (me her senior, i shall never let her forget), we had many adventures together, even though no matter how much i begged or attempted to bribe her - she would never deem me her "favorite" cousin. nope, that honor belonged to charity (who now shares a double wide with a homosexual husband named earl and five children. condoms = abortion. it's god's way). well, i think i'm beating charity now. . .

we loved sour patch straws. jolly rancher candies. greasy, crunchy, juicy broasted chicken from the norseman supper club, four blocks down the street from my childhood home. chucky movies were the best. we had a ball, with the limited resources we had. if we didn't have an arcade, we made up our own live role playing video games. we didn't have the coolest movies, so we made our own with my uncle's video camera (or at least plotted them out with props, scripts, actors and planned how it would be filmed if he ever agreed to let us borrow his equipment). my favorite film of ours that was never created involved an oversized bouncy ball, a ginormous teddy bear and some sort of haunting premise.

we also wrote plays. some live with humans, but mostly with barbies and my vast troll doll collection. our other cousin lacy usually turned our barbie plays into some sexual twisted display, which always left staci and i scratching our heads, wondering what "pussy" meant and why lacy kept slamming the barbies plastic pelvic areas into ken's plastic underpants. our moms would shake their heads, bored (and stoned) out of their minds at our weak displays of directorship and thespianhood.

we played bar instead of house, especially at lacy's trailer. one of us would get to be the bartender, and the others would pretend we were wasted, based off our parents' examples. if there were only 2 of us, we'd get our stuffed animals to sit in the other chairs so the bar would look full. shots of pickle juice, orange juice mixed with milk and mustard, flat coca cola, we drank it all. never booze, though. not sure why.

lacy taught me how to shave my legs for the first time. 13 months older than i, she knew the rules of beauty and was in the same boat as i in our mothers not permitting us with our own bics and shaving gels. being in the sixth grade and tormented every phys. ed class in shorts was not a fun experience. "hey gorilla legs!" it was already bad enough coming from a poor home and having the humiliating rounds of free lunch tickets announced by my homeroom teacher every morning. throw in a bad mullet haircut, "cokebottle - double paned soundproof" government issued glasses and hairy legs and it was just too much. so when lacy dug out two rusty disposable razors out of her mother's bathroom garbage, how was i to know that this could be a bad idea? finally! an out of gorillahood and an in to womanhood and potential popularity (or at least, lessened teasing). lacy proceeded to scrape her legs, sans water or soap, with her razor. "this is how my mom does it, you try."

i did. no water, no soap. rusty edged razorblade orange handled bic. i still have a pretty visible two inch long scar on my lower left leg from where the blade scraped my flesh in a thin, straight, long strip from my leg. that shit bled. forever. i couldn't hide the bloody toilet paper balls, shoved in the bathroom trash from my mom and she knew it wasn't from my menstrual cycle. (that joy came two years later). she was pretty horrified at my disobedience and quickly provided me with my first accurate shaving lesson, complete with name brand aloe razors and shaving gel. "jesus, jodi." and several bandaids and neosporin applications later, the scar eventually subsided to what it is today, a slick, shiny indention that is only visible in certain angles of light.

another favorite game staci and i would play together in my hometown was called "monsters." all this pretty much consisted of was running around like maniacs along the street until we'd spot cars approaching in the distance. as soon as the cars were within visible distance, we'd make some sort of whooping sounds with our mouths and shout "waaaaam waaaaaahm waaaahm, MONSTERS!!!" and run for our dear lives to avoid being viewed by said beasts (the monster's (car's) headlights), and dive down the slopes into the nearby park or throw our bodies flat onto the ground. if we were "spotted" by a monster, we would be frozen in place in fear, similar to freeze tag, and remain standing with our legs spread apart so our co-players could come to our rescue when no additional monsters were in sight, and crawl through our legs, thus freeing us from the paralysis brought upon by the monsters.

we were hick kids, that's for sure.

nowdays, i find myself living in one of the largest city's in the country. a city where real monsters roam the streets and murders, rapes, and various other criminal activities never dreamt possible in our hobunk villages occur on a daily basis. would our freeze tag and diving into the ground tactics work here now? probably not. then again, sometimes i wonder if we aren't the real monsters ourselves. drinking into oblivion, following the paths of our mothers, this time playing bar in the real deal vs the doublewide. turning our backs onto our forgotten youths and cluelessly wandering forward, unsure of what lays ahead.

i could really go for some jolly ranchers about now.

P4K v.20.10

yesssss.

initial line-up of p4k blew up the indieblogospherewebzone today.

modest mouse, lcd soundsystem, raekwon, pavement, st. vincent and a few others. kinda surprised about modest mouse and lcd, given that they're more apt to headline a lollapalooza or coachella sort, but whatever. i'm def getting my $90 worth for three full days (friday's got more music this year around) of sunshine and jams.

out of chicago residing friends o' mine, consider this here blog post your formal invitation to crash at my crib the weekend of july 16-18th. if yer interested, i highly recommend picking up tix sooner than later, this shit sells out fast. i did pick up an extra 3-day pass for anyone who will eventually need it, or i'll wind up making a profit on CL i'm sure.

shit. will. be.

Text from a Dad (Not Mine)

From: Rog Celly

Yo Jod-meister:

Thanks for being a good friend to the girls, you're the stable influence for both girls (and that's hard to believe). You take care and thanks for being Jodi!

Roger. (let's keep the thanks between us, the girls can get a little weird)

rollercoaster monday (a tease of something yesterday)

i don't know if it was becuase today was totally lame and long. (reconciliation of mundane forgettable speaker bureau programming IS very fulfilling and everything. . . ) or if it's a side effect of that nasty heavy chipotle i consumed for lunch. (mother fuckers forgot my chips.)  or a post delayed reaction to this past weekend's full moon. (bitch didn't even leave the apartment once. apparently, i'm really lame and old now).  or just. ( . . . ) something. (what).

but. (it's true, today was weird.)

i felt like dirt. (flopped on my bed and groaned, the minute i walked in the door. tired, sad, burnt out, def no energy).  then i didn't.  (??? and this was after an hour long grocery shopping spree where i blurted to carrie every five minutes, "I'M GONNA THROW UP!")

without even realizing it, i just leapt out of bed and entered some sort of teenage trance. pumped up the gaga. (yeah yeah yeah, I DO mean lady gaga, what you gonna do about it).  loud. danced with the kitty. lip synced in my mirror. (WITH my purple round caboodles hairbrush, thank-you-very-much). full out dance party. took a hot, steamy, sudsy shower. and sang my goddamn guts out. tone-def as all hell. (i'm sure my neighbors were happy i left my bedroom window open tonight).  not giving one shit. just jumping, leaping, whipping my newly dyed red loxx up in a high-top pony tail. (i looked really pretty, trust me).  dancing with the kit some more (she actually didn't seem to mind, really, i think she was more put off by me smiling).

now i'm curled up in my bed, cuddled in my fave neon pink/blue t-shirt and hot pink butterfly shorts. (so what if i dress like alicia silverstone in clueless, you can suck itttttttt). still shimmying my stress away. (well, at least my feet are). not caring about this or that or worrying about dumb garbage. just wondering how long i've had all the words to "monster" memorized. (probably for a few months or so).

should i be creeped out that at age 26, i'm still jumping up with joy for pure, unapologetic pop candy?

fuck, no.

i wish i could do this more often. at least once a week, if not nightly. but that's prob pretty unlikelly.

this impromptu dance party took me back, very briefly, like a flirtation of my teenage years. the brief moments i've managed to forget that weren't so boring and dramatic. i've neglected to remember my hours of one-girl dance parties, leaping and frolicking in my bedroom sanctuary, screaming from my gut the angst of tori amos, the demanding, riotgirl alterna-goddess lyrics of veruca salt, yelling myself hoarse to the growly poppiness of garbage. ok, so maybe lady gaga is a bit more sugary than what i'd belt out to 12 years back, but who gives a shit. i'm still on a bit of a high and i feel better than i have in, well, i guess hours.

delayed 2010 goal: have more one-woman dance parties.
