the vaselines rule.

i caught the cult 80's alterna-blink-and-miss-em legends the vaselines at lincoln hall the other night.ima write a review too. i'll post 'er up yonder when i get around to it. let's just say it was a pretty stellar show, but you can see for yourself with some vids i captured here.

KEYBOARD CAT RULEZ.

happy halloween ya'll. i was thisclose to being a crazy creepy cat lady for halloween this year but figured that wouldn't really require any sort of costume since i already am one. . . so instead i'm winging it and going as my favorite internet meme. la keyboard kat. i've included a few of my favorite clips below and above for your viewing pleasure. photographic evidence of my attempt at recreating said ball of adorable fur may or may not soon follow in the coming dayz. trick or treaaaaaaaat!

men i want to date : Stefon Alexander

i had to flip through my archived men i want to date posts to double check i hadn't already rambled about the sexy mastermind maestro better known as p.o.s previously. i'm still having a hard time believing i haven't. . . but whatever. i'm doing it now. mr. stefon alexander is a leading force in both the doomtree collective and rhymesayers family, since i can't really post about wanting to date eyedea out of simple taste, p.o.s is not a bad secondary subject of lust. plus, i've seen him live (both performing and not) several times - so maybe not a likely choice, but one i can at least realistically creep on ala mel on flight of the conchords style.

reasons why stefon alexander is a man i want to date:

1) he has tattoos AND glasses- tattoos are sexy, but glasses are even sexier
2) an incredible hip hop artist, his rhymes are both upbeat yet grounded, simultaneously getting listeners fired up and to give a shit - ain't alotta positive rap out these days
3) he's in GAYNGS so if our date wouldn't go well, he could probs pass me justin vernon's digits
4) i've always wanted to kick it with fellow doomtree goddess dessa, so hopefully if we get married she and i could hang out
5) whenever i'd get pissed off at any of my pals for blowing me off, i'd just have stef rap 'goodbye' to them and i'd win
6) he's minneapolis born and bred - a relocation i would not mind in the least, maybe we even have some of the same friends!
7) his style is so versatile i've seen him perform with fellow rappers, some punk shit and even cursive once - which was kind of awkward, but not as painfully awkward as when i starstruck deer in headlights approached him at the bottom lounge to tell him i was a fan
8) i'd get free tix for rhymesayers events for lyfe.
9) i'd get to kick it with slug on a regular basis
10) he keeps it real with his fans - when he busted out 'purexed' at sxsw in 08, he saw me freak out in line for the portapotties and pointed me out with a big ole grin. made me shudder SWV style all weak in tha knees.

muzik trivia.

CHIRP will be a hosting a sort of gameshow music trivia event at the empty bottle early next month, and in exchange for volunteer hours they asked us to contribute some of our musical know-how. i think my questions are pretty easy and blatant, but what the hell. while riding the rickety #9 up to the metro the other eve, i scribbled down the following q's for submission.

i just realized i've reached official dorkdom after rewording and researching these mere 6 questions the past two hours. slurping on microwaved spiked apple cider, taco sauce ring around my mouth, and pita crumbs and slimy hummus residue caking my authentic 2001 bleed american jimmy eat world hoodie. who needs friends & social interaction when you have rainstorms, a sneezing cat and snacks. not me.

anyway, if you so feel inclined, feel free to leave yer answers/guesses in the comments section and i'll school you on random 90's alternative know-how. at least then i won't feel like i'm a complete waste of music nerdom space.

raping my writer's block.

words have been difficult to come by lately. the motivation and drive to pummel out material has been dried up and nonexistent. ramblings and reviews have been trickier to knock out than convincing my roommate to do the dishes. in other words, it sucks. in efforts to make a change, i've been stepping up and agreeing to additional obligations beside my norm monthly load. i joined CHIRP. CHIRP is cool. it gets me free tickets to shows and excuses to write as i knock out reviews for albums in rotation. for those of you who don't know what CHIRP is, it's the chicago independent radio project, a volunteer grassroots effort for a noncommercial radio station. currently we're streaming online at http://www.chirpradio.org/ and are fighting legislative powers to pass a motion for low power fm stations to have power in major cities. its a struggle, but hopefully one we can win.

CHIRP has been a great way to meet and connect with new people, and in addition to having even more access to new music, i get the opportunity to attend interviewing workshops to strengthen my current skills and have dj training this saturday with a possibility of being on-air once again after a 5 year hiatus. radio roots. its' a good thing. finally, 5 years after college graduation i'm doing something halfway relevant with my journalism and radio/tv/film degrees. too bad i can't get paid for it. . .

regardless. in addition to chirp, my gigs with venus, chicago innerview, i recently started contributing to another local blog, secret note. so far, i've only contributed one assignment but the editors seemed happy enough with my excerpt and have expressed interest in additional pieces. to try and keep myself on track, i sought out confirmation for some upcoming chi shows. here's what i've got on the books thus far. i still need concert attending buddies, so if yer planning on attending any said shows or would like to, gimme a shout. i could use some music pals.

10/22 - deerhunter/real estate - metro
10/28 - the vaselines - lincoln hall
10/29 - the books - vic theater
11/17 - dresden dolls -vic theater
11/21 - no age - lincoln hall
11/23 - wolf parade - house of blues

i'm also thisclose to shelling out the monies (a mere $15) for junip (jose gonzalez) & sharon van etten at lincoln hall on 11/6 - anyone interested in being my date? i'll hold your hand and lean on your shoulder.

r.i.p. eyedea

and i was just thinking of listing this hip hop maestro as a man i'd like to date. . . too little, too late as the 28 year old rhymesayers mpls staple was taken from us this past week. cause of death is yet to be released, but i'd assume drugs/suicide as those are the most sensitive possibilities and would explain his family's wish for privacy. i hope this isn't the case, but following the career of mikey larsen, i wouldn't be too surprised given some of his darker subject matters. i'll never forget the first time i heard the opening hooks of 'now' - instantly hooked with his double time rhyming abilities and his knack for keeping up with the likes of atmosphere, murs and other established emcees. so fucking talented. r.i.p. man.

jose gonzalez - better than valium

but the combination of the two : perfection.

today was a tough day. got a case of the overall blues. anxiety overload. feel like something's about to change. this should be a good thing - perhaps the neverending job hunt will finally come to a peak. but instead, there just sat this burden on my shoulders. this unspeakable pain in the back of my mind, like a monkey on my back. after the inevitable meltdown that's been on hold for months on end, i realized it was probably in my wisest interests to stop listening to the magnolia soundtrack on repeat and put the kleenex box away. put the cellphone down and quit anticipating a text which wouldn't come. quit stalking on facebook. fuck, i don't even know what's eating at me - maybe it's just my new birth control mixing up my horomones like a kamikaze cocktail. whatever it is, i hadn't felt in this rough of shape since high school in the lonely angsty fields of argyle, wisconsin.

once i popped the last resort necessity anxiety meds and washed my face, i swapped the ipod to the new junip cd. i had to write a preview for innerview this morning as mr. jose gonzalez and his back up duo will be hitting up lincoln hall in november. i had downloaded their free internet ep last month, and i've been revisiting gonzalez's breakout debut record veneer more often than not lately, but i hadn't checked out the debut junip full length release, fields until a few hours ago when i was chugging iced red eyes at the local cafe in my job hunt.

even if yer not an anxious nutjob like me, you'd have to be deaf or emotionless to not enjoy this record. with the combination of gonzalez's slow, sleepy vocal melodies and classical guitarwork, his band channels african and spanish elements into his easy, folk-lite rhythms. it's extremely chill, and easy to see how gonzalez has earned such international acclaim since his breakout success of the 2005 cover of the knife's 'heartbeats.' swedish by argentinian descent, gonzalez is all over the map with his different musical influences, yet meets the listeners halfway with his relaxed and gorgeous orchestration. typically, i get tired very quickly of guitarists with light vocals - but something about gonzalez's delivery is mysteriously enchanting and romantic. (i swear this isn't just the valium speaking - this album is damned gripping to put it lightly).

it's albums like this that i wait for. the sleepy surprises that you would never anticipate to creep on your top ten lists. the unexpected movers and seductive listening pleasures - no album since veneer has had the same effect on me. so bravo, gonzalez and crew. you and only you have succeeded in helping me breathe normally and loosen the deathly tight grip i've had around my ragged teddybear's neck the past two hours. now i think i can finally sleep easy, and maybe even relax.

i heart jose. and junip. but especially fields. this is a pretty and mesmerizing album. please go listen to it now. you can stream it on myspace (yes, myspace) in completion here: http://www.myspace.com/junip/music/albums/fields-16498472?ap=1

jodi meets azure ray (unedited remix)

so i got the chance to call up miss orenda fink of the southern dream pop saddlecreek duo Azure Ray for innerview the other week. she was polite, cheerful and sweet - but unfortunately didn't give a lot of in depth answers. this is the unedited/unpolished recap of our convo, typos and misspellings included. cuz, umm, well, that's how i roll. if you wanna read the fancy schmancy version, yer gonna have to check out chicago innerview on 11/1. that is all.

It's been seven years since the last Azure Ray album and you've both worked with a whole slew of new people, (how) have each of your writing and recording processes changed in the interim. Was working on this new album easier/harder?

It’s hard to say how it’s changed because I feel like it’s a long organic process that I don’t know, I think it’s just totally better. But um, I don’t know I’m not sure but I think coming back to work together was just like going home in a way. It was really natural and I think that we brought our strengths from each other’s projects but there was something in our core that is always gonna be the same and I think that’s why we work so well together, because we interact so well.

What brought you two to finally making another album together after a relatively lengthy hiatus?

Maria was living in Los Angeles and I was living in Omaha and I was touring with Rilo Kiley as a live member of their band so I was going to Los Angeles a lot to rehearse and I would just stay with her and we reconnected. We made trips for me to come back out and then she tried to talk me into moving out to LA and then we’re finally like we should just be playing music together since we’re having so much fun hanging out and making all these plans – what if we did that. So we kind of eased into it and it was just a joy every step of the way.

Given all the people you've collaborated with in the past (collectively and individually) is there anyone else out there you're still looking to work with, specifically.

Oh gosh, I don’t know. I mean, yeah, sure. We wanted to work with Dangermouse but he was busy with Broken Bells so that’s somebody we definitely want to work with in the future.

How permanent is this reunion/will you be returning to solo work/your other bands (O+S, Art in Manilla)?

After this record, Maria has a side project with Andy Lemaster and I have a side project with Cedrick Lemoyne which is called O+S so we’re both going to do those records with them and then we’re going to do another Azure Ray record after that. Because we have all these songs that we were producing for this record and some you know ideas for the future . . . .

I keep hearing your songs (Azure Ray, solo work, work with other groups) in movies and on TV. In your opinion what's the weirdest or most awesome project that's approached you about optioning a song? Who have they turned down?

I think probably the most awesome for attributed song was for Short Bus. (laughs) We were kinda skeptical about that one but let’s see what have we turned down, you know I don’t think we’ve ever turned anything down we haven’t had any inappropriate offers. I imagine there would be some kind of commercial for feminie products or something we would definitely turn that.

I’ve read articles in which you’ve spoken of your experiences in Haiti as inspiration and influence in some of your solo material. How has this spiritual experience played into your new material with Maria? Have you picked up musical attributes you didn’t explore previously in your 7 year hiatus that we can pick up on the new record?

Not so much on this record, I think part of our goal is to really come back to a common place between the two of us so I don’t see how bringing something so very specific to me individually would kind of maybe been counterproductive for what we were trying to accomplish so for this record, no. I think we were more thinking of a collective versus any specific outside influences and trying to bring this all in and that would not have maybe worked out so well. But in the future, maybe it will work itself in somehow in a more organic way.

What’s on your bookshelf at the moment?

I just read this book called the Glass Castle by Janette Walsh and it is so good, I need to get some books together for tour, I’ve just been so busy.

On tour yet?

Starts the day after tomorrow we did our first rehearsal show at a club here in Birmingham las night and now we have two days off to get all our shit together and then we take off the day after tomorrow. The tour is six weeks. We’re really looking forward to playing Chicago, we love Schuba’s it’s awesome.

What are you rocking on your ipod? Any new artists we should know about?

I’m so bad about that, I usually just listen to the oldies or my friends’ bands. But my friend Laura’s band the Mynabirds are really great.

What’s your favorite song on the new album?

Oh gosh that’s always a hard one. I like them all the same! Actually Maria and I have both listened to the record a bunch but maybe because we didn’t write it, Silver Sorrow is one of our favorite. Eric Buchman wrote that song.

What’s the last show you went to as a fan?

The last concert? Umm, let’s see, I think that would be. . The Flaming Lips maybe? A year or two ago, I mean I find myself at a lot of concerts but like one that you specifically go to.

What’s your favorite city to tour? Any venues or cities you get really excited about in particular?

In the US, you know we always love to play the bigger cities. We live in LA, La’s really nice we have a lot of friends and the bigger shows usually have a little more excitement. But there are also great – I mean we have friends in almost every town so you know its just a different I get to see this person here, this person here, it takes on a different primitive vibe depending on where we’re leaving to the next day.

Pre-show rituals?

Maria drinks red wine and I drink Heineken and Jameson only. That’s it, those are kind of are really standard pre-show rituals.

atmosphere vs. chicago (2k10 rmx)

it'd been a good 2+ years since i last checked my boy slug live when he busted out the god loves ugly tour to the vic in 08 following his lemons tour appearance at the metro. both shows wowed me endless. as did his gig with blueprint at the orpheum in 05. hell, even his gigs way back when at the warped tour were raw as hell. i know i've caught him live at cmj in nyc too, and dude is obvs my hip hop idol. so when i heard he was busting out his new ep tour for 'to all my friends/blood makes the blade holy' at the congress this past thurs night i was boutit boutit from the get go. homeboy makes hella rad live performances.

unfortunately, my bartending friend also makes hella rad free whiskey cokes. so where i wanted to write a formal review of this performance, i'm afraid jodi's doctor scribble notes are even more illegible than usual. i do know that this show was one for the books though, and slug hyped up the packed ass crowd at the congress more than any other performer i'd ever seen. the crowd was downright ROARING their love and approval for atmosphere, and slug seemed genuinely taken back with appreciation and positive vibes. there was more than a fair representation of old and new material and the sound was surprisingly ok for the ballroom like venue. i know i had a damned fine evening as did everyone else in attendance. now, instead of a formal review, i give you jodi's scribbled ass drunken play by play notes. if they don't make sense, well, then you've never met me under the influence of alcohol.

Atmosphere

1 - "Trying to find a Balance" - folky vocal opener

2 - Slug - "This one goes out to all my friends," - Sexy sleek bass heavy "Shoulda Known"

*crowd roars approval - slug shouts  and pointsto guitarist - "Fix yo' fucking amp!"* leads into new joint,
3 - "Hope" - (i hope you already got laid today twice)

4 - "Guns & Cigarettes" -piano track, crowd arms goin' crazy

*more old shit, 'i just might just find somebody'- 5 - "Between the Lines"

*girlfriend turns to me, "i think i'm starting to question my taste in men. b/c he is downright sexy;" me: "DUH!!"*

*Slug - "I'm sorry Chicago bout all them old songs," (crowd boos), "I just wanted to see how many old fans we got in the room," (crowd cheers - loudly), "Would it be ok if I play some more new shit?" (crowd cheers)*

6 - "nobody tells a cowboy what to do" - "To All My Friends"

7 - familiar piano opening - crowd loses shit, particularly me - "Sunshine"

8 - "Modern Man's Hustle" (handwriting gets especially sloppy) - Slug says he's scared of all the eyeballs in the room, asks permission to play another new song

9 - "Freefallin'" (should be noted when I interviewed him he said he'd love to spend a whole night covering tom petty songs - this reminds me of this)

10 - "Puppets" - Slug, "Oh I forgot to tell you we're Atmosphere. We're from Minneapolis. How many of ya'll have been to Minneapolis?" (crowd roars) "Here's a lil story bout where we're from"

11 - (i think the song was 'waitress' but this is where my notes begin to include one scribbled illegible word per torn up notebook page)

12 - "God Loves Ugly" (jodi's drunk ass scribbled 'god is ugly'- same diff)

*scribbled ramblings on one page read - "groove, trax, purple, whiskey, crazy, god, life" (yep. this pretty much sums it up)*

14 - (where'd 13 go? probably with that last whiskey coke but something tells me it might have been 'reflections,' although that's prob wishful thinking - i just remember rapping to ashley that line about having a lot of lovers) - "Shrapnel" - crowd clapper anthem

*more illegible nonsense - "mixer i missed lots o crowd say whooooahs smore lead a song campfire" - wtf*

15 - "Guarantees"

*Slug - "Let's be real - this is as close to church as some of us get - so make some noise for the person next to you. Chicago, we fucking love you."

16 - "Don't Ever Fucking Question That"

17 - "Pour Me Another"

*Slug - "Childrens, if you're under 25, go have some babies. If you're over 25, go get preggo tonight and get your fucking life together and make babies. (writing gets extremely difficult to decipher and broken - 'lets overpopulate this mother fucker L4 Babiez') 18 - "Love Life"

19 - "Always Coming Back Home to You" (he didn't rep the hidden verse with props to oshkosh, wisconsin - madison, milwaukee - so I look stupid for shouting to Ashley that he gives props to my college town, oh well)

20 - Ode to Midwest - "Say Shhhhh"

21 - "Yesterday" - encore

22 - "Best Day"

notes end here. i proceeded to stumble to the green eye where they rejected my entry. went to swig instead. danced. consumed pbrs and woke up to find incriminating photographs on my camera of a female friend and i paying exaggerated attention to one another's cleavage.

i'd say it was a pretty damn fine evening myself. come back soon, sluggo.

xo,

joe d.

SWAG.

wtf. gimmick.com

so i've been reading hype post after post about this south african hip hop outfit called die antwoord. i managed to avoid em based on the whole buzz overkill nonsense but finally got bored enough into checking out their latest video after i learned diplo was in it and any excuse to see his cute ass face is worth it. well, i think i can honestly say this is one trend i don't get. i just don't. i see what they're going for, but i'm not enjoying it. does anyone really like that high pitch freaky girl's voice? and that rat looking ninja dude? i ain't sold. this just makes me feel old and makes major lazer look like an after school special.

ME + YOU (statutory rape remix)

is it bad that i kinda wanna squish them chubby chipmunk cheeks and rape the shit outta him? i mean, not in an 'oh my god he's so dreamy i want to bone him' way, but more in a 'i want you to feel pain and sob violently' kinda way. plus, it'd probably piss off usher.

for the birds.

i googled "butterfly killer" and just found a bunch of creepy myspace profiles. rephrasing, i searched 'what kills butterflies' and found this: What kills butterflies? birds. in the top result. i think i may need to invest in some birds. they say time helps, but these fluttery little demons really need to die already. it's been way too long.

or just maybe face reality.

i think reality may actually be the ultimate butterfly assassin. it's time for that shit to hurry up and kick me in the face.

GAYNGS : the last prom on earth (in chicago).

Decked out in white suit jackets, plastic shades, hoodies, matching beards and even a raccoon skin cap, GAYNGS initiated the windy city Thursday evening with their debut Chicago performance at the Metro. What the venue lacked in attendees, (it was shockingly far from sold out), the Midwestern indie super group made up for with their swagger and incredible loverboy stage presence. With a line-up more impressive than Pitchfork Music Festival, GAYNGS’ rotating roster includes members of Bon Iver, Megafaun, The Rosebuds, Doomtree, Solid Gold, Andrew Bird and more. So while it was no surprise that all 25 members couldn’t rep on stage, POS and Dessa of hip hop collaborative Doomtree and Grant Cutler and Maggie Morrison of the recently defunct electro pop outfit Lookbook were disappointingly noticeably absent.

Taking the stage around the ten o clock mark, the whitest dudes responsible for the biggest influx of hipster baby making wasted no time in getting down to business. Kicking things off with Relayted’s sexy beat-box opener “The Gaudy Side of Town,” it became clear the night was going to be one for the books. The ten man crew transported the crowd into a sexy surreal world of 80’s electro synth throwback make-out jams that would have made even George Michael jealous. Blue, fuchsia and golden hues illuminated the bedroom party ambience, and it was unclear if it was Justin Vernon and Co. or the crowd who were enjoying themselves more. With all the swaying, finger pointing, gayng sign throwing and lazy smiles being tossed around, everyone in the building was helpless to the seductive hypnosis that seeped from the indie R&B jams. While the entire track list of Relayted was accounted for, joints like “Faded High,” “Spanish Platinum” and “The Last Prom on Earth” really stood out.

While the autotune was on the brink of ‘ok dudes, that’s enough,’ the ever charismatic Vernon (you guys, he had his prescription glasses on under plastic red sunglasses, a polo cardigan and a raccoon tail hat and still pulled it off – how much more stinkin’ adorable can you get??) managed to pull it off with his Wrigley Field cracks and never ending grin. The sound quality of Ivan Howard and Mike Noyce’s vocals was dead on and the overall instrumentation was pretty fantastic considering all the sounds erupting from such a small platform. Closing off the night was the encore cover of The Alan Parsons Project “Eye in the Sky, a fantastically intimate and melodic jam that had the entire crowd swaying in unison. It was the perfect one night stand, full of dancing, hot passion and zero regrets.

a dedication.

GAYNGS - Eye in the Sky from GAYNGS on Vimeo.

this song is really hitting home right now. it makes me think of a certain special someone. sitting at home, feeling like dirt - yet it's hard to be upset when this song is just so damned pretty.

writer's block : is 5:00 am insomnia a cure?

whoa. can't write lately. don't know why. picked up some extra assignments with diff peeps but all i seem capable of completing are tasks with deadlines. tomorrow i have two. so tomorrow i will complete two. but good lawd, i wish i had the motivation to write more for me. haven't had much energy to apply for jobs, either. this whole week was a waste of time. just slept in way too late and went to bed way too early. slummed. but right now, while i kind of want to stray away from personal posts rambling on inner thoughts or whatever, i'm giving into it because this is the first time i've felt like typing ANYTHING in something like 2, 3 weeks without an assignment.

this sounds dumb, but matchbox 20's '3 am' popped into my head randomly (don't ask me why, i must have heard it subconciously in a gas station or something.) i actually hate matchbox 20 and rob thomas. and that song in particular. but when thomas sings, 'babaaaay. it's 3 am and i must be lonely.' i realized that it's well, actually 2.5 hours past 3 am, but i am still awake, and dare i say, lonely? maybe. .  . but actually, i don't think i am. i think i'm finally turning the fantastical page in my head where i desire the hypothetical happy ending that will never happen (at least today or tomorrow). characters need time to develop. plot needs time to thicken. we can't keep living the same story on repeat or you get stuck with a shitty doomed to be cancelled sitcom. (god, why am i such a sucker for cute boys??!)

today/tonight actually gave me a lil bit to mull over with my current lifestyle. sleeping all day and drinking all night: not healthy. not healthy for obvious physical reasons, but more for my emotional/mental state. sitting in apathy/not being motivated to color outside the box : i'm my own biggest enemy. i have to get the fuck out there and do it. patience : it truly is a virtue. maybe that happy ending will come along, just with a twist ending. (after this evening i'm starting to think anything may be possible).

who knows. i have tendencies of being dramatic. (or a brat, as told by one person in particular). but i also need to quit selling myself short. quit settling. quit holding my breath. a job/boyfriend/perfect life is NOT going to fall into my lap. in fact, i guess i don't really want any of that noise. but the job i at least have to TRY to attain or i'll wind up with my ass in the street sooner than later. at least tonight i got the opportunity to network like mad and met some valuable new people. that's good, right? effort. step in the right(ish) direction.

god, my back is sore.

what am i even rambling about.

it's 5:30 am and despite my mind racing a million miles an hour, my body's screaming for rest. i have many adventures and musical thingies to write about. hopefully tomorrow will be the day these rise to the surface.

but tonight, the only additional composition penned from yours truly is a lullabye. to myself. in my head. to go to effing sleep. (bone bone bone bone bone bone bone). . .
