Oh 2Pac. "Changes" surely was a great song. I think I read somewhere that it was featured on the Pope's Vatican sponsored official MySpace song list. (I'm not lying!) Homeboy in his funny hat hates on the gays but he's down with makin' g's in a sleazy way, cuz well, we gotta get paid. (But that's just the way it is).
(Sidenote: My Senior Class Video (a 15 minute shitty ass powerpoint presentation of old kid pictures of my 32 classmates on vhs) has this song in the soundtrack, despite the class consisting of all religious straight farmer white kids. Other songs included: Vitamin C "graduation song," some shitty ass country songs and Smashing Pumpkins. Argyle High School Class of 2001 REPRESENT!)
Oh well, pac and pope references aside, I decided I'm going to focus more attention on this site. See if I can big willy style pimp it up and make it my regular writing go-to. In order to do that and actually score some loyal readership, however, I gotta mix some stuff up. Make it not quite polished (cuz that's not how i do), but more consistent. I already messed with the actual layout of the site last week as you can see, there's new pretty colors, links are highlighted, all that fun stuff. I even added "share" capabilities if you like to retweet or fb post some of this shit (not that my rambles are worthy of that, but I do that frequently on other sites for vids and articles and crap). And I added a "reactions" capability where you can click whether or not I'm being mental or super hilarious (which i mean, is the correct reaction).
Just kinda playing around, you know? Anyway, apart from my ramblings, back to consistency. I want to have regular column/like posts. If any of you are currently reading mwah, you've probs noticed the reoccuring 'men i want to date' post. that's a fun one, keeping that one til i want to date the entire world population, i think. but yeah, more stuff like that to come. any suggestions? here's some i've been kicking around. . . i still wanna keep a lotta the content the same but maybe just bucket it a little more clearly. here's my thoughts:
Men I Want To Date : Jodi rambles about dudes who will never bone her but why she thinks they should anyway
Revisited : Pretty much that, every so often revisit an older music release that is still classic after so many years (1-30, although let's face it, my old school music knowledge is pretty pathetic, so I'll more likely unearth an obscure album from 5-10 years ago you never heard of but will thank me for digging up now), kinda in a review like format, but also reppin' why it's so great and hopefully including links for you to check out on yer own too
You Should Probably Listen to This: New music rambles/reviews about how awesome it is or will be. I do a lot of these anyway, but never really put a header on it. Any suggestions on something catchier? Otherwise it will probably be something like that. I used to actually work on my college npr like radio doc program called Now Hear This, but that's too polished for me. Maybe "Quit Masturbating and Listen to This Now" is more fitting. . . .
Celebrity Haterz : Where I hate on losers like Dam Funk and hope that they have nothing better to do than read my shitty blog.
Real Talk : Where I whine about how much my life sucks or any personal garbage I just have to throw out there.
OMGWTFROFL : Ramblings about weird shit. Like, tear stains, for example.
Then I want a final column which is a bit more polished for actual critique reviews. If I decide to expand this site to do actual reviews and work with promoters exclusively for unpolished, I gotta make it sound a bit sharper. so I need a clever column title for this : Maybe something like, I Was There: (Band Name/Venue/City) or something like that. (Ex: I Was There: Atmosphere/Metro/Chicago).
Thoughts? Any other clever ideas I should bucket in my revamping? Comments/feedback much appreciated, ya'll.

tear stains are like, totally sick.
http://www.angelsglow.com/angels-glow-success.php?offset=15
you could spend literally, hours, flipping through the photo gallery of "success stories" on angels' glow tear stain removal product page. (i know, i have. thanks, corporate america). for the sake of this post, i only got around to the 3rd page which is what i've linked above, scroll down to the fourth dog, that's my favorite one.
SERIOUSLY HOW GROSS! i hate little 'purse dogs' to begin with, never have been huge on dogs really to begin with as the crazy cat lady i am (there are exceptions, of course). but how nasty are those little white bitches with brown crusty slimey TEAR STAINS?? (i never knew they were called tear stains, but i find it absolutely hilarious so i will continue to reference to these disgusting markings by their proper name if only for the sake of me chuckling aloud to myself at 12:31 am.
anyway. tear stains. that's all i got. if any of you are really bored and have a dumbass sense of humor like me and my former partner in crime in cubicle procrastination, courtney meeker, then hopefully you will enjoy these sickly eyeball photographs. otherwise, hell, maybe yer pooch needs some. in which case, yer welcome.
can you hear that, rap won't save you.
actually, i may have to disagree with mr. mictlan on that line. shit was dope enough to save my bored drunk ass for sure. wound up checking out the cd release show for minneapolis/doomtree's very own paper tiger thanks to my pal mr. stensby on saturday night. first time at the new hipster swank venue, sauce. reminded me of a nicer/newer schuba's if i had to stretch for a chicago equivalent. maybe like if the owners made lincoln hall the same size/structure of schuba's - one main bar/food/room when you walk in, and then a small intimate kinda stage area in the back where the performers go on, but everything seemed shiny and new. it was cool. didn't know too much paper tiger's background other than that he's affilliated with the doomtree family and was more on the production/beat maestro swing of things.
had seen various members of the doomtree crew live in the past, predominantly p.o.s., and then sims, mike mictlan, dessa and lazerbeak. dug em everytime i saw em. my pals had mentioned that members of d.tree would probably make cameos if we were lucky to support the cd release, and it turns out they did and made the night pretty memorable, busting out tracks every other joint to the crowd's delight. not only was paper tiger in attendance, but dessa, sims, mictlan, lazerbeak, pretty much all the crew but p.o.s. no complaints. i can't really say too much in a review type of format as i was happily hammering my $3 pbr tallboys (HEAR THAT CHICAGO, $3 TALLBOYS, LET'S SEE IF YOU CAN UP THAT!), and enjoying my friends' company, but the soundtrack was banging. it was a super small venue, solid sound and positive energy. when mictlan busted out my fave doomtree track, 'game over (go big or go home)' i lost my shit. definitely one of many highlights from my venture 'up nort' this past weekend.
for those of you who aren't the most hip hop literate and more indie scene, i guess my way of describing doomtree would be to say its the equivalent of underground hip hop (think atmosphere, they roll with him time to time), but like broken social scene. each member is core to the group and performs as a collaborative effort, yet still breaks out and does their own stint. it's super positive, rad ass beats, and got hot as hell peeps in it. if you haven't heard em yet, check em hurr: http://www.myspace.com/DOOMTREE
men i want to date : gucci mane
ok. i may be prematurely jumping the gun on this one and may be more infatuated with the idea of SAYING i went on a date with gucci mane vs actually wanting to go on a date with this ridonkulous hip hop dude, but whatever. it's a post and i'm gonna roll with it b/c i've been on a mega gucci MANE kick the past few days.
reasons why i want to go on a date with gucci mane:
1. he's all over lil wayne's mixtapes, so if our date wouldn't work out, he could help me implement my life long dream of carrying lil wayne's seed.
2. he's got his own t-shirts "free gucci mane"
3. he has a horrendously disgusting grill. (if i asked really nicely or freestyled for him, maybe he would get me a matching one!)
4. his joint with big boi is hella tight
5. i bet if he really liked me he'd be all up on gifting me knock off gucci so then i could show it off to all my friends and when they'd say 'ohmygod jodi, where'd you get that gucci???' i could say, 'oh, its just from my boyfriend, GUCCI MANE' so it'd be an ego booster to him and a free purse for me. win/win.
6. his name is radrick, so if we got hitched i bet i could convince him to take my last name, radrick root. i like the sounds of that.
7. HAVE YOU SEEN THAT SICK BART SIMPSON BLING NECKLACE HE WEARS? I WANNA STEAL IT!
8. homie's track 'wasted' is my new fave baller anthem. he and i could get wasted together.
9. i could once again be the talk of the town of argyle for 'dating a black guy'
10. dude, how many white girls from wiscompton are taken seriously for freestyling? that's right, none. but i could EASILY be the first if my first single was co-spit with the help of GUCCI MANE.

i was at the jabberjaw. (cutest boy i ever saw).
yo minnesota, you ready for this? last minute trip is in order to visit all ya'll in my sister state up nort. i'll be arriving via megabus round 8 tomorrow nite, stickin' round til tues buttcrack of dawn. i'd for realzies like to see all ya'll up there, so hit me on my cell or fb for the jodi hotline if you ain't got it no more. drinks and dancing are much in order. gots to meet baby T and see my ole riva fallz girls and crew. lemme know if there's any shit goin on this weekend worth checking out. someone mentioned flutag or whatever the hell that redbull stuff is, that could be dope. anyway. i'm coming. get ready.
plus, i will be singing that dog all weekend. i mean, really, who can pass up my sing alongs?
men i want to date : diplo
i forgot about my long time diplo crush up until p4k this last weekend. major lazer can be simultaneously obnoxious/annoying as fuck and oh-my-god-dance-party-awesome. only hearing his recorded major lazer stuff prior to p4k, the beeps/bops/boops were ok for workout music but i failed to be wowed. well, after the ruckus i witnessed on sunday, my mind is officially changed. i always loved everything mr. thomas wesley pentz remixed/reworked in the past (i mean, hell dude is credited with working with both m.i.a. and santigold early in their careers), but now it's official. diplo is a man i want to date.
reasons why i wanna date diplo:
1. even though he's blonde and i typically have a no-blonde dude rule, he is fucking HOTT. baby blue eyes, messy, but clean cut hair. sick. i wanna dry hump my computer screen just looking at him. . . moving on. . .
2. he named himself after a diplodocus. he loves dinosaurs and even has one tatted on his arm. boys who like dinosaurs are probably the most adorable thing IN THE WORLD.
3. dude can make a fucking mean dance party soundtrack. for realz. piracy vs terrorism? bitch, please.
4. homey can get into any show in the world. i'm sure he's got priority for plus ones, free tix to m.i.a and santigold? yes, please.
5. he looks mighty fine in a suit.
6. he could teach me the ropes of daggering
7. we both studied film in college, so it's not like the color of our skin is the ONLY thing we have in common
8. he could probably jump start my career like m.i.a and santigold's. ima be the freshest mc straight outta argyle, wiscompton.
9. i bet he makes his girlfriends really awesome mix cds.
10. if conversation ever got awkward on our date, we wouldn't have to talk. i'd just shove my tongue down his throat instead. i'd be perfectly ok with this.

the hood internet is cooler than me (and you, and a certain somebody else too).
my boy noah just threw up the interview i did with stv slv and abx of the hood internet a few months back. he shore is a nice fella, said some nice werdz bout me on his super rad website. you can check it hurr: http://blog.wordlifeson.com/2010/07/20/interview-with-the-hood-internet/ He even gave props to my recent rapper blog/twitter feud, but don't worry all is forgiven (see at the jump).

p4k : day three
annnnnnnd day three was the final day of scorching 90+ degree heat and lots'o'walkin/boozin'/dancin' for this girl. (thank god). i don't know how anyone had energy for after fest shows and parties, i really don't. i'm exhausted now and am even missing my beloved free monday music in the parks as a result. no. more. walking. ever. (or at least until tomorrow).
but alas, the line-up on sunday was ridiculous in the wrong way. too much good shit going on at once. had to zig zag between the a-b-c stage set-ups non stop. but i feel confident i got the most outta my day regardless. saw some really good shit and some surprises too.
walked in just in time to hear (but not see) the last song of best coast's set. bummed i missed it, but i did manage to catch my fave girls' song (laura) and a few others before heading to the b stage to check out washed out's chill, electro new wave shaded jams. dude was small. and cute. and decent soundtrack. something new i had heard and read about, but never actually listened to before and now may look into post fest. had to miss out on local natives unfortunately, in order to catch the awesomeness that was beach house, but i'm ok with that.
beach house was my number 2 looking forward to p4k necessity (after robyn, DUH), and they did not disappoint. all my faves from teen dream were accounted for including 'zebra,' 'silver soul,' 'norway,' 'walk in the park' and many others. i swayed (barefoot, of course), and dug the company of some fellow beach house fans that were all friends of my friends, but never friends before this magical set. i just love when friends become friends. it's just so nice. this was a seriously awesome set, the sound was fantastic and even though miss victoria legrand sported long sleeves, you could tell that she and her fellow guitarist were in full performance mode. alex scally commented on the heat, 'if you don't leave this set with soaking wet underpants, there's something wrong with you.' this statement could have been accurately interpreted in different ways, either you are normal and sweat, or you enjoyed the set so much you ejaculated (which i was close to), or you peed because you couldn't bear to leave the set to go to the porta john. i was almost all 3. my underpants were far from dry, believe me. i still stand behind my statement that teen dream is album of the year. for realz.
i tried to stick around to see what the commotion about l.bolt was, but after about two seconds of loud noisy guitars, i was done and tried to check end of local natives, but failed. the one upside was that after my ears bled to the autrocity of noise that is lightning bolt, was that i managed to catch a bit of surfer blood. got to hear 'twin peaks.' that was cool. then it was off to the lovely annie clark's st vincent set on the c stage. girlfriend was smoking hot in her red little mini dress number and wailed it on her guitar. i knew she wouldn't disappoint and she didn't. love her. zig zagged back to b just in time for a couple of here we go magic's radical set, boogied and bounced again just in time for MAJOR LAZER.
major lazer's albums always kinda of left me puzzled. loud beeps, boops, mash ups, shouting, air horns, obnoxiousness. don't get me wrong, i love lust love anything mr. diplo puts his hands to, but this collaboration just left me feeling like a weird white girl who can't dance. well, get him on stage with a black dude and a screaming yellow mohawk, five booty shaking bitches and ballerinas, a chinese dragon, shit is different. so much booty shaking it was insane. i was shouting. shaking. dancing. my ass was on firrrrre. biggest dance off i've had in years it seemed like. never ever ever pass up a chance to check out these dudes rock a dance party. words can't really describe it, just made me shake my ass unapologetically. plus chinese dragons are really cool.
the unfortunate part about major lazer unexpectedly kicking so much ass was that i missed neon indian. that sucked. but i wasn't down for long b/c as soon as big boi took the stage shit really got real. i've heard from everybody but my mother that his new record is the shit and that i gotta get it asap. i wouldn't know after yesterday b/c 90% of his set was outkast old skool jams. homeboy busted out 'so fresh and so clean,' 'ghetto muzik,' 'i love the way you move,' 'b.o.b,' 'miss jackson' and tons of other shit. it was pretty fucking funny and ironic, (although i am also guilty) to observe the sea of white kids swaying their arms to 'rosa parks'. yeah, push that bus you fucking hipsters. we ain't sitting nowhere near the back. oh wait, we're white. we never had to deal with opression, wait, quit, find the closest black hipster! (sorry, the only two there were with me). funny. but awesome. super good set. when bb busted out 'shutterbug' i got my lesson in ass shaking 101 for the 2nd time in the day. i swear my ass is still sore from all the booty grinding it got done yesterday. (this isn't a bad thing).
i guess sleigh bells were being divas and went on 20+ minutes late. everyone was complaining. this, however, was excellent news for yours truly. i thought i'd miss them after sticking around for big boi's set, but instead i arrived with enough time for 'rill rill (or ring ring via demo version)', 'crown on the ground,' 'a/b machine,' 'my kids,' 'treats' 'rachel' and a few others. i'm pretty sure i caught all but 3 of their songs. thrashing. lots of 'oh-oh-oh' action going on. swirling around in skirts. drinking beers. kick punching the air. you know how i do. good times.
then it was pizza time. and pavement. you know, i respect pavement and stephen malkumus. i can see why they're held to the high classic status that they are, but to be perfectly frank, they kinda made me tired. they opened the set up with 'cut your hair,' which is my fave song of theirs, (and to be honest, the only one i recognize by the title), but i did recognize the next 3-4 numbers. i got to say hi to stv slv and feel cool. i ate my pizza. drank my beer. watched the bright twinkly lights. and then, as my 27 year old tired ass sweaty body recommended, i listened to it and went home. managed to beat the rush and had a fairly painless cta commute home and was in bed by 11:00 pm.
jodi win. p4k 2010, you were a good run. next year, let's turn on the mother nature a/c unit a bit and maybe offer more than heinekens for brew selection, whattya say?
p4k : day two
let's see how my memory serves me for two days back. . . saturday, saturday, saturday. not the strongest of the three days (that would be a toss-up b/w fri and sun, for sure), but not a horrible day either. there were a few good surprises.
luckily for me i was well rested after opting to go home early friday night, but unluckily for me it turns out i was on the darkroom's guest list for dickfork (i found this out through dj stv slv of the hood internet who i ran into sunday night - when he asked why he didn't see me, i told him i had run outta dough, 'but i saw your name on the list!" woops. fail. oh well.)
flew solo sat for the most part, arrived in time to check 3-4 of delorean's tracks, which were ok. it's never really a good idea to throw in a dance crazed indie sesh at 2 in the afternoon, so it was a bit lackluster. i got to hear 'stay close' which is prob my fave track by them, so that was ok. strolled to meet mr. handsome joe and crew over on the b stage for a bit of kurt vile - never had heard of/or heard this dude, but his shit was ok. stood in the sun,got heated, but sought refuge in the shaded tree area in the back until dam funk went on. dudes, no matter what i ever say about music, for the sake of your earbuds please hear this: DAM FUNK DAMN SUCKS. it was so bad. i think he was supposed to be hip hop or something but it just sounded as if the-dream and lil jon got wasted on some new wave acid shit and made some wackass 'GANGSTA' pussy beats. so fucking bad my ears bled. so gross. hated it. the sound was gross. the back up band in their shitty white tuxes were gross. dam funk was gross. i don't think i've ever seen so many ppl hightail it out of an enclosed area ever. it's painful to even think about. no dam funk. no no no.
so instead we opted to go check out some real hip hop and strolled to the a stage to check raekwon. raekwon sounded MUCH better than dam whats his face, but encountered a crapton of technical sound difficulties, halting the show in increments. which sucked, cuz like, you can't hype the crowd with C.R.E.A.M and then just stop for five minutes. but he did. it was cool to hear a handful of 36 chambers joints for sure, specially with brews and such, but the interruptions were distracting.
post brew and pizza break, i reconvened with my hippie friends to check jon spencer blues explosion. not so much by choice, but b/c i wanted to stick around the area for wolf parade who played next. jon spencer and crew are getting up there in age, but for what they do, actually surprised me. they weren't that bad. just a bunch of bluesy grandpas i wouldn't mind boning jamming away on their harmonicas and whatnot. although i kinda did wanna punch jon spencer in the face everytime he squealed in his auto tune BLUES EXPLOSION!
made it kinda up front for wolf parade. wasn't sure what to expect. didn't want all new stuff, didn't want any mount zoomer stuff, didn't want all apologies. i was pretty happy with their chosen set list. from apologies they played 'i'll believe in anything,' 'dear sons and daughters of hungry ghosts,' and 'this heart's on fire' (my fave). from mt zoomer they played a couple tracks, but made the mistake of closing out with the way too long and jammy 'kissing the beehive' which really started to confuse me towards the end, but that's just because i was kinda fucked up at the time and was thrown off by the repetitious chords at the end. noone should play 10+ minute long songs at a fest, c'mon. outta new stuff, i picked up on their singles 'what did my lover say (it always had to be this way)' and 'ghost pressure' and i know more new and old stuff was interwoven, but like i said, jodi had indulged in some silly juice and didn't take notes. i know dancing commenced though, and the overall sound quality was pretty righteous.
then it was time for panda bear. well, i don't want to wind up sticking my foot in my mouth 2 months down the road if i wind up worshipping dude's new record, but for the sake of the festival it was basically souped up animal collective. lots of reverb and crazy electro noise with an occasional yelp "oooooh!" thrown it. liquid neon visuals on the screen. thank god i was stoned. good lord i was confused, though.
and then lcd soundsystem. well, it's their last tour. and james murphy rules. and the new album, well, you can take it or leave it but that's what we've got. i think it's a grower and half decent. the crowd was condensed as fuck for this particular set and my biggest beef was that p4k is quiet as fuck for all headliners. at one point b/w songs the crowd even started yell/chanting 'LOUDER LOUDER LOUDER' and james murphy just kinda awkwardly smiled and shook his head. at one point later in the show he even was shouting out about how members were spinning at an after party with details, but then stopped and realized, 'you guys probably can't even hear or understand a word i'm saying right now, can you?' not really. but we still love you for it. homeyz busted out 'sound of silver,' 'all my friends,' 'get innocuous,' 'time to get away,' 'daft punk is playing at my house,' 'yeah yeah yeah,' 'drunk girls,' 'you wanted a hit,' 'i can change' and closed things off with 'new york i love you but you're bringing me down.' fun dance party. for realz. just man, shit should have been louder.
post set i waited like a fool for not 1, not 2, but 4 ashland busses full to capacity with fest goers before i realized i was prob better off on foot to go meet some non-p4k pals. strolled up to division and grabbed a brew at gold star b4 shoving my face full of brats at a pal's aptmt on grand. so exhausted, but i made it home after another long, sweaty, 90 degree dancey brew filled day.
jodi is getting too old for music festivals.

p4k : day one
wow. so i gotta say all in all, last night's set at pitchfork was probably the most consistently awesome single night experience i've encountered with my 3 years of p4k under my belt. so many great performances, awesome people that came through, just fun all around. i'm now laying in bed filthy and exhausted, but about ready to throw on some coffee, scrub off the dirt and do it again. i can't imagine how i would have survived last night had i attempted to venture to the dark room for dickfork, so i guess being older and opting to go home to bed has its perks. . .
post bfast at the milk factory (potatoes, salad and pbr), dara and i head to the park to figure out my dilemma. (i, like a dumbass, bought my tix the day they went on sale and then threw the envelope in my jewelry box to sit for 4 months without ever opening them. opened them up friday night, and boom! the tix were all stuck together face to face, tried peeling them apart and they just ripped all the info off. i was freaking out.) luckily for me, the p4k box office dude was not a douche, but smiled, handed me 6 new tix and told me to have a good time. thank god.
strolled in time just to catch a couple of the drippy drowsy, pretty, (yet kinda boner kill) love songs of miss sharon van etten. she sounded good, just not dancey. stocked up on brew tix and made it to the c stage where the tallest man on earth wooed the crowd with his swedish folksy bluesey indie ditties. when he busted out 'the king of spain,' the crowd loooved it. (me too). i never really heard much of this dude before, but i've read about him everywhere - it's for fans of bon iver, peter wolf crier and maybe slower stuff like what you'd find on the jagjuwar label. pretty, ecclectic, but very bare bonesy minimalistic acoustic rock. dude gave a shout out to robyn, so i love him on this alone.
post tmoe, el-p was kicking things off on the adjacent stage. i gotta say, i was kinda looking forward to el-p as p4k needs a good mix of hip hop, but like last year's doom set, it failed to impress. it just reminded me of being at debonair on a monday night with any of the regular rehab djs, nothing HORRIBLE, but nothing new by any means. just recycled booty bump whatever jams. i was giving him the benefit of the doubt though, and was having a really good time with my girlz, so i tried to ignore his lyrical content and just kinda chug brew shake my booty combo. but i couldn't really continue into my dance party oblivion when i heard homeboy keep repeating 'eat my dick.' what? did he really say that? yep. yep he did. 'EAT MY DICK' indeed.
next up: liars. never seen these guys live either. heard a lot about em, know they're super hip and kinda chaotic. loud, ruckus. indie rock. whoaaaa, so off the formula kinda shit. i actually dug em. i only heard a couple of their album recordings from a few years back, so i knew it was time i checked em again. i thought their live set was pretty rad and decent, but the two dudes i was with kept insisting their indoor performances are way better and that they were dragging. talked to a couple other peeps later who said the same. so i guess, for neutral or new fans, good times (like myself). for hardcore fans, could have been better. whatever, i grabbed another brew and just kept hopping around.
THEN IT WAS TIME. ROBYN!!!!! seriously, i know i'm way super biased b/c i love her to death and am like one of those twilight girls who splooge when they see robert pattison, but god damn girl KILLED IT! post set i checked my cell and got like 16 some text messages from diff people agreeing with me saying damn girl ruled, slick!, 'glad im not dancing on my own,' etc. shit was insane. i know i lost it. dara and i were cutting shit up and post show some dude grabbed my arm, 'you were like the biggest robyn fan here! you knew all the words! looked like you had the time of your life!' my response? 'DUH!'
seriously. so good. even if she was lip synching. i don't give a shit. she played a bunch of jams from her new album, opening up the set with the super slick production electro drum filled 'fembot,' then she played everything from 'with every heartbeat,' 'don't fucking tell me what to do' (or should i say she just rubbed her back and stretched, rather than performing to this one, didn't really get it), 'cobrastyle,' 'hang with me,' 'none of dem,' 'dance hall queen,' and closed things out with my absolute fave fave fave 'be mine!'
danced so hard. my feet are permanently black from boogying on the ground. i don't care that was exactly the stress release i've needed from the past year. if only every day had a robyn dance party. i swear. couldn't top that if we tried. . .
but we tried, of course. i strolled to the world's longest beer tent line EVER! (seriously p4k kids, try to smuggle in booze if you can, bag dudes are not that hardcore, and the evening lines suck! day lines, not so bad). . . so i really only got to hear broken social scene's set instead of joining my pals up close, but from what i heard they played a good representation of forgiveness rock record, including 'texico bitches' and some older shit from the last few albums too. they did play the 'pacific theme'. this is my jam, so that was super cool.
then, to top off an already magnificent evening, i joined a new group of pals to the upper right hand side of the a) stage to catch the closers for the eve, modest mouse. lots o' bros. lots o' weed smoking. i just ignored all that, chugged another brew, and focused on my barefeet dancing. they played a good assortment of shit from their latest ep, noone's first and you're last, (including satellite skin), we were dead before the ship sank (including their single dashboard), good news for people who love bad news (quite a few songs actually, but i gotta say i lost my shit a tiny bit when they played the view and i just started sputtering and bouncing into bros).
feet are super sore. my body is probably dehydrated, and is most definitely tired. but i think it's time i go scrub up, head to the milk factory for some delicious bfast (beer), and do it again. today i'm hoping will be stellar as well, but sunday's the real hot ticket. might check out panda bear, lcd soundsystem, delorean and a few others today. . .
post bfast at the milk factory (potatoes, salad and pbr), dara and i head to the park to figure out my dilemma.
(seriously p4k kids, try to smuggle in booze if you can, bag dudes are not that hardcore, and the evening lines suck! day lines, not so bad). . . so i really only got to hear broken social scene's set instead of joining my pals up close, but from what i heard they played a good representation of forgiveness rock record, including 'texico bitches' and some older shit from the last few albums too. they did play the 'pacific theme'. this is my jam, so that was super cool.
then, to top off an already magnificent evening, i joined a new group of pals to the upper right hand side of the a) stage to catch the closers for the eve, modest mouse. lots o' bros. lots o' weed smoking. i just ignored all that, chugged another brew, and focused on my barefeet dancing. they played a good assortment of shit from their latest ep, noone's first and you're last, (including satellite skin), we were dead before the ship sank (including their single dashboard), good news for people who love bad news (quite a few songs actually, but i gotta say i lost my shit a tiny bit when they played the view and i just started sputtering and bouncing into bros).
feet are super sore. my body is probably dehydrated, and is most definitely tired. but i think it's time i go scrub up, head to the milk factory for some delicious bfast (beer), and do it again. today i'm hoping will be stellar as well, but sunday's the real hot ticket. might check out panda bear, lcd soundsystem, delorean and a few others today. . .

summer soundtrackin' : caribou.
ok, so 'odessa' won me over from the instant i heard the horn infused spirally trip happy pscyadelia indie dance jam back in the spring. and then when i finally downloaded his latest effort, 'swim,' i was equally pleased. but i gotta admit, i kinda listened once or twice, agreed with some pals that 'yeah, this record's really good for sure!' but then shelved it on account of it not being the hardcore make out session soundtrack i had hoped it to be. (god i'm lame). anyway. i knew and still do now know better. i had been a casual follower of mr. daniel victor snaith since i checked his 12 inch for 'yeti' and 'the milk of human kindness' back in my days of wrst fm and i knew he was good shit.
how good though? well, if monday was any inclination, i gotta give homeboy mad props. his electronic orchestration and layers of intimate, yet bass thumping dance happy psychadelic indie pop are delectable, hypnotic and enchanting, all whilst being uber hip.monotone, yet airy vocal work, it entices even the most casual fan to listen in closer, to observe what this mysterious little white guy is humming about.
checked the free set at millennium park this past monday along with the budos band (who surprisingly wowed my guts out! felt like i had time traveled into the 1960's into a british spy mystery with all the brass and horn works that was going on. very jim jarmusch's 'broken flowers,' i felt as if winston had burned me a mystery mix cd, but nope, it was just the budos boys with the help of some of sharon jones's dap kings, GOOD STUFF).
totally rambling. but let me just get to the gist here. caribou was amazing live. me and my girls had a massive happy dance party on our wine and grass stained bed sheets. barefoot boogying. starburst snackin. chocolate chip cookies and merlot. a tail gating blanket bash. ideal summer soundtrack. when 'odessa' came on, i lost my shit. at one point my friend turned to me, all smiles, clapping with her cute indie haircut, 'oh wait a minute, we're like 4 minutes into this song and i realized it's not really a dance song! why am i clapping?' BECAUSE YOU'RE ADORABLE AND WE ARE HAVING FUN AND IT DOESN'T MATTER. shit was so fun.
i really think you all should go listen to 'swim' if you haven't already. it really is a fine collection of art, regardless of whether or not you've got a lip smacking partner nearby. perfect for a summer time jam soundtrack, 'specially live.
men i want to date : paul rudd
whoooookay. so i totally thought i already devoted an entry to mr. rudd, so i never really looked back on to verify it or not. but i guess now, sitting here on the hottest night in the world, rapping lil wayne songs into my box fan in my underpants, i realized it's the perfect time to dedicate a post to this sexiness. totally geeky. very much wimpy bro wing man type. i got nothin but infatuation for them lil white boy cheeks. hell, i'll even forgive him for boning his sister on clueless.
reasons why i wanna date paul rudd:
1. umm, he's hot.
2. after role models, he's def got a pretty good handle on the whole larping thing.
3. even though he was a creepy perv, he was in clueless and that movie rulez.
4. he's friends with adam scott (another guy i'd like to date)
5. he just strikes me as the type of polite dapper man who could stand to meet my creepy mom, and hell, probably even smile while doing it.
6. how adorable would it be to be cuddling in a kitty paul rudd sandwich????? GOOD GOD I JUST PUKED RAINBOWS OUT OF MY EYE SOCKETS.
7. he could probably introduce me to steve carrell and that would be pretty cool.
8. he seems like he'd be a good music fest partner in crime.
9. if the first date conversation sucked, we could always just make out.
10. if we hit it off and got hitched, my last initial would still be R and Rudd really isn't that diff than Root, so that'd be pretty convenient.

NEED YOUR HELP!
OK, so this is an extraordinarily long shot. . .
but i got a tip off that p4k is looking for freelance writers. i know i'm not snobby enough or have a large enough pretentious vocab to even be considered, but i'm giving it a shot nonetheless b/c it PAYS. so, one of the criteria is that i have to submit 3-4 of my 'best' pieces. well kids, i've written a lot. and i have no idea what sounds the best. so please please please, if you're bored at an office job, bored at home playing on facebook, or busy but looking for an excuse to procrastinate, i'd SUPER REALLY appreciate your help.
i've attached a variety of links from past articles that i feel half decent about, if you could please email or comment in the posts your fave pieces that you think sound the best or schnazzy, i'd appreciate it. even when the dicks at p4k pass me up, at least i'll feel flattered enough to know that you my luvlies read my words and took the time to give me feedback.
heart you all.

unemployment : el guincho edition.
so if i had a job i probs wouldn't have been able to hit up the free el guincho noon show at millennium park today. so that was pretty cool. strolled solo but wound up having a pal meet up with me who i havent seen in a while so that was neato. busted out the dirty blue sheet. instead of the usual obligatory bottle of merlot, i busted out the aluminum water bottle and hummus bread stick snacks. guess i am a white girl, after all. (gotta save energy and drunkenness for the awesomeness that will unfold as the budos band and caribou in a few hours!)
the show itself was pretty stellar. opted for a farther back lawn seat instead of the chairs, spread out with a book. the sound quality was super solid. homeboy lost his voice, being from barcelona and all, with spain winning the world cup last night. still managed to hold through, it should be interesting to see how his performance at schubas tonight holds up though. . . (wish i was going!)
last time i saw pedro bust out it was november 2008, following a breakup in the coldest winter of the year. who was my date? oh the said ex boyfriend from recent breakup. he did not like el guincho. i liked him. it was awkward. but regardless of the less than ideal situation at the time, i still managed to get entranced with the chillwave spanish animal collectivey vibes he was spitting and forgot, albeit momentarily, that it was cold as fuck outside, due to the warm, summery tropical samples and spanish chanting. i wish i knew what he was saying, but the music speaks enough in itself that i could care less if dude's rapping about hemmehroids. i just like dancing. and el guincho makes me dance.
it was nice to see the summery jam dance party in the actual sunshine though, with blue skies and green grass. pritzker pavillion is really fun in the summer. he even played some new songs in addition to all my faves from alegranza! including palamitos park, antemillas and others. he's also super adorbs, so that helped.
free music is fun. outside shows are great. friends? even better. got a huge ass crew in tow tonight, but if yer available hit up the jodi hotline and join our shit. it will be real. (and omg there are SO many shows this week b4 p4k! can't even handle the awesome music that's bout to follow, expect many more music-y blogs on hurr in the near future).

jodi the freestyler came back last nite.
ok. so i guess right now i'm pretty much where i was at this time of the year last year. just kinda rewound my life a bit, sans job/apartment, but otherwise, exactly where i was last year. realizing, whoa, friends are pretty awesome and i don't need to be a big frowny face all the time. b/c being sad and lame is stupid. people who make you sad and lame are even more of a waste of time. so whatever. this is it.
last night, after sleeping all damn day, i opted to head down to west fest to say hello to good old handsome joe and crew. my friends are the bestest as they smuggled me several free tallboys and then escorted me to rainbo where we got in all sorts of hootinany. at three different points in the night, i busted out some freestyle. while, i am very very bad at rapping, the mere fact that i slipped into the comfort baller stage i once owned returned, albeit briefly, meant that i'm getting better. i don't give a shit about no dumbass boys. i don't care about the job situation. the family drama, well, it is what it is. me having a good time on a saturday night with some downass people has nothing to do with any of these bummers. so fuck it.
after a rather therapeutical week with long lost pals (and newfound friends!), i'm really starting to get it. it's like someone slapped me cross the face with a stupid wakeup retard stick. so now ima ball again. just keep on trying to get a job, hopefully get the apt george and i applied for in w.park, and just keep having fun with my crew. monday's both el guincho and caribou. thursday's all sorts of pre-p4k shows, one at bottom lounge and a whole mess of others. friday-sunday, DUH, is p4k, including dickfork at darkroom with the hood internet and sunday MOB's sponsoring a chicago set at the abbey pub.
distractions, distractions, distractions. eventually they're no longer distractions, but my life. and it's fun. i just gotta force myself to fucking get over stupid ass shit that ain't worth my worrying time. i don't have that much time, i gotta focus on the fun shit. LIKE DANCING TO ROBYN IN 5 FREAKIN' DAYZ!!!!! omg. gonna die.

what a shitty dream!
i don't know if it's b/c i indulged in alcohol last evening, got a tiny bit emotional, am super scared of getting my haircut today or if it's simply anxiety in anticipation of my hubby coming to visit me today (A-R-L-O!!! come to liar's club tonite for delectable shenaniganry), but i could not sleep worth a damn last night. and when i did, well, i had this really shitty dream.
i was writing for venus, which i do. and my girlfriend got a writing assignment with them too. cool! but her one assignment was only about 15 words. and she got priority over me in any future assignments even though she made it blatantly clear she didn't give a damn about the publication. ok. well, she got hired! permanently! as a full staff writer! ok. this STILL isn't the shitty part of the dream. apparently, i had an assignment to write a feature on robyn. (which i did in real life! zany, yes?). and something here or there got mixed up and i had a phone interview with her and noone told me about it so i nearly missed it! i told my editor i was done with the assignment, she accepted it and was like, "well how is this complete without the interview? it's supposed to be in 20 minutes."
i freaked out! and then the editor called robyn and said i wasn't feeling well and we'd have to reschedule. but then i got an email directly from robyn wishing me health and to feel better and that we'd talk soon. then i was elated. but then my editor realized she made a mistake and i wasnt supposed to interview robyn, she cancelled the interview, i didn't get to talk to my dream pop goddess, and then i was at a girl i knew in grade school's grandma's house and the girl came out as a lesbian and i had to eat some nasty ass strogenoff.
THE HORROR!!
so i woke up this morning, blue mascara caking my eyes shut. throbbing headache. scared to get my haircut. anxious to see my boo. sad about dumb shit. and now i'm laying in bed feeling gross wishing robyn was my friend in real life, but grateful that my real life friend doesn't have my dream job.
weird. word. what?
next monday, ya'll.
if you don't have plans at noon, join me at millennium park. el guincho is playing and i promise it will be a super fun radical extreme set. i know most of ya'lls got 9-5'ers, but if you don't have to work for whatever reason look me up and we can hold hands and boogie on my gross wine stained blue sheet to the super fun tropical electro pop vibes of mr. sexy dj man. aaaaand at 6:30, it's a double whammy cuz caribou's playing and cmon, the new record is pretty darned phenemonal. so there will be lots of dancing. and who doesn't like a dance party? electrosexmadness, i tell you. (this is a good thing, i promise for realzies).
bro repellent : guaranteed.
ok, so ladies. if you got a bro in a gross ass fireman's shirt trying to mack on you, here's what you do.
say he approaches you and tries to compliment you, "say, nice nose ring," ignoring it won't work. b/c then he'll just be like "whoa, tattoos, what do them say" and you gotta explain all 6 visible tattoos with a generic fake smile and be like, 'ok check it out im a bitch but still too sober that i gotta be subtly not interested leave me the fuck alone.'
this doesn't work with bros. at least not drunk bros who think that playing against an nes system aka "the asian" in a boxing match is legit. FUCK THESE TOOLS. ima tell you straight how the fuck to get ridda such geeks.
next time said bro approaches you asking to take your photo when you're clearly doing ok drunkenly taking pics of you and your friends with the old extended arm trick and homey tries to fucking TICKLE YOU or FORCE YOUR FACIAL MUSCLES TO SMILE, all you gotta say is the following line.
"Oh, me? You don't want to talk to me. I reccommend not touching my face or tickling me again."
Dumb douchebag bro: 'CMON SMILE"
"you really dont understand, i'm a pedophile who seeks out mormon children with downes syndrome. I prefer to sotomize them."
bro, fake smiling, "what? ummm, you're kidding"
"no i'm serious, i prefer to utilize tampons and lightning rods. I even record the hot action with my webcam and save it on my own youtube channel. I've had 75 hits so far. It's what all the people with hot tattoos do. Needles and pain man, makes US CRAZY."
homey loses his smile. quits touching me. walks away. "uh well, you ladies have a good nite."
my girlfriends look at me with an astonished wow, jodi, you went there expression and i receive not only a round of high fives, but a complimentary round for the nudie photo hunt machine.
see kids, life is getting better. alllllllll the time. i'm ok with this.

Revisited : Veneer
oh man. i don't know how or why, but i totally forgot how amazing jose gonzalez's debut solo lp Veneer is. of argentinian descent, this swedish folk musician composed beautiful and delicate acoustic guitar melodies topped with his soft, yet majestic vocal work. very bare and minimal, he proves you don't need a whole horse and pony show to make incredible music. this record came out in 2005, and i had discovered it my last summer working in wisconsin dells during my stint as music director at wrst. not hearing anything about him or the album, i had just picked his disc by random out of the new arrival bin. put it in not expecting anything. . . and got so much out of it it was instantly one of my favorite albums of the year.
tracks like 'crosses,' 'lovestain' and of course, his rendition/remake of the knife's 'heartbeat' (omg this song SLAYS ME) are incredible and strong enough to carry the album on their own. he's a beautiful musician. eloquently crafted, i can't give him enough praises. i lost my physical copy of the record a few years ago, but after streaming mpr the current the other day, i heard a new track from his side project junip - (who also rules, btw and you can download their entire ep in exchange for signing up for their mailing list here: http://www.junip.net/ ).
if ya'll don't know jose, you can download veneer here. it truly is a beautiful and soft jam kinda record.

distractions.com
i need a partner in crime. or maybe two. i need someone to harp on me and make me motivated. someone to join me for bike rides to coffee shops or the library. someone to say 'hey jodi how's the jobhunt going' on a regular enough basis where i get annoyed enough to actually try to get a job just to shut them up. i need an apartment, but hopefully george is on that shit, might check out a couple places in bucktown on thursday. i need routines, i tried in vain to try and rejuvenate the book/craft club action but it seems everyone, albeit interested, are too preoccupied or busy. i tried to hang out with my family to strengthen ties there, but that was just temporary.
if i had a car, i'd go to minneapolis in a heart beat. the more i think these days, the more i wish i had more time. i fucking love chicago, this city, these people. but the only way i'm going to be in a better place mentally is to recreate myself and my situation. a change in scenery almost always helps. the last time i had a breakdown like the one last week was when i was 19. i wound up transferring schools across the state, and while i left a lot of close people behind who i still care for deeply to this day, i think i made the right choice. i didn't end up being miss popularity at uw-o like i was at uwrf, but i was grounded. i did meet mike, and i'm pretty sure that was meant to happen. so it was fate, i guess in a way. go batshit crazy, force yourself to make a change. that's the routine, anyway.
so now what change is it i'm supposed to make now? it's too last minute to move anywhere, and i don't even think i'd want to if i could. i guess i wouldn't mind giving the fine folks of minneapolis a year of my life and then return to chicago, but in all honesty i think i'd get even more restless up there than i am here. but would a smaller city do me good? maybe. . . but moving is obviously out of the picture now. so what are my options? well obviously, i need a place to live. and i need a fucking job. this FUNemployment bullshit is beyond stale and i'm ready to leave my apartment before noon. only thing is even fucking waitressing jobs are damn near impossible to nab. i'm overqualified for all the shit i see posted, yet i can't even score an interview for anything. i let the temp agency know i'm finally ready to return to cubedom, just waiting on an opportunity. . . so yes, job, apartment, both obvious contenders in my race to return to sanity. but those both will take time. what's my instant gratification for happiness?
this i don't know. i have four writing assignments to work on. my best friend in the world is visiting me thursday. i have this new laptop i can actually take out to work in cafes and shit. i get to catsit in a couple weeks. but i still need more. thinking about a physical re-do and maybe cutting my hair. dying that shit. i don't know. i wish i had a pal who could whisper motivating slogans and keep me encouraged. i guess if molly could speak english, she might be able to help out. at least she's purring and laying by my arm right now, despite the a/c being turned off.
i can only relisten to edward sharpe's 'home' so many times before i go crazy. but happy fun songs are good. this is one of them. i recommend checking it out.
this ramble is not making any sense. i'm going to pick up my book and try to zone out. at least this typing felt semi-therapeutical in a way. oh, if only it were thursday now. maybe arlo is my savior and will help me turn this frown upside down, i sure hope so. . .

little miss planner something.
so typically whenever i feel the itch to be the hostess with the mostest, i plan out every small intricate detail weeks, if not months ahead of time. this just winds up with me being stressed out and barely any attendees. so when my pal who lives down the street said yo jodi wassup i got this booze melon and a grill wanna do this? i was like, aight. i'm trying to lay low, don't feel like shelling out mad bones and travelling to wpark for 4th madness, let's do this.
ending result? something like 40 or so people crammed on my porch, chowing DOWN on the most food ever served at my crib in one serving ever. delicious dogs, brats, spicy sausages, chicken, veggie kabobs, grilled onion, asparagus, chips, brews and a hugeass boozemelon. realized it is possible to have mad fun with a minute's notice vs 3 months of hair pulling madness. the people i always expect to come through didn't necessarily all show face, but what was better was that all those who never usually show did. And that meant more to me ultimately anyway, text: jodi i'm here! me: you ARE??? i didn't think i even invited half the ppl who showed up just cuz they never can make it. . . .
anyway. this ramble just goes to say that planning is probably my strongest and weakest characteristic. being in control of today, tomorrow and yesterday isn't always worth it. just adds stress and needless worry. i'ma try to chill out and just go with wherever this ride is taking me. i can't be stuck in the ghettos of depression that much longer, right? soon enough, once i quit worrying and stressing that is, i'll turn the corner and something else will evolve. i just hope i remember to fasten my seatbelt.

men i want to date : adam scott
ok, so up until last night i didn't even know this dude by his real name, just by his weird face. but i think i'm in love with him, so who cares, right? i'm not sure i can even muster up 10 real reasons i wanna date this homeboy, but i think i'm in love with his face so i will just make some things up in attempts of being funny and fail really bad. ok? good, it's settled then.
reasons why i want to date adam scott:
1. he has a pentagon shaped face
2. i've had a crush on him since i first saw his face.
3. he's so ugly and quirky looking i want to rape his guts out it's so adorable
4. have you ever seen 'party down'???? that shit is hilarious!
5. he's friends with paul rudd so could probably hook me up with him if our date didn't work out so well
6. i've always been intrigued by older men (not really), so this could be my one old dude date (i think he's like, 37?)
7. not only was he in an episode of law and order, but also boy meets world, so i could get intros to both the old dude cop with glasses and ben savage. AWESOME.
8. he looks extremely nerdy and skinny and ya'll know how i go for them types
9. he's got a lot of acting work, so could probably afford to pay for my drinks
10. he was on an episode or two of parks and recreation so we could invite aziz ansari to join us

T minus 15 days til. . .
I get to see Beach House for the 2nd time in 2010. Seriously, this will be THE performance of P4K. Ya'll have no idea how stoked I am to see this magic live (again). Their last chicago performance at the Metro this past winter BLEW my mind. It was amazing, sincerely. I can see how Victoria Legrand's husky vocals may not take everyone off the edges of their existence immediately, but this album, (teen dream), i swear. everytime i listen to it it just continues to build and build in excellence and majesty. So eloquent, beautiful, melodic, enchanting. The pianos, the dreamy organwork, the guitars, soft percussion. The formula is the whole package. With Legrand's vox drifting atop the dreamy instrumentation, I automatically put myself in a different place. A happier place. One of dreams and goals and detachment. Where none of my bullshit mundane problems exist, but i can just close my eyes and just be. This album is incredible, folks. Definitely my top album of 2010. It was released in January and I knew that this would be a contender for certain, but here in July I am positive.
Thank you Beach House for ruling so hard. I can't wait to watch you in 15 days when I pee my pants in excitement and laugh and cry and dance and roll aroun on the ground.
That is all.
P.S. If you don't have this album, please contact me and I will fix this for you ASAP.
