TOP 10 OF '10, YA'LL.

so i wrote up a list of my top ten releases for the year for the chirp website. it'd been on my to-do list for quite some time, and the fact that it took me as long as it did to get around to it kinda bummed me out. i had been thinking about the list all year, as i always am a nut with music and wonder, 'but does this have any longetivity? will i listen to it to death for the next 2 weeks and then shelf it into oblivion?' kinda bums me out to say 2010 was a bit lackluster of a year for releases. sure, there was shit i dug and listened to to death. like, the new nicki minaj album and even girl talk, i like them both immensely now - but did either of them make the cut for this list? negatory.

plus i guess i spent a lot of time this year revisiting older shit, like my massive siouxsie and the banshees phase this summer. oh well. ramble rant aside, i did manage to come up with a list of ten albums. this isn't to say i didn't enjoy additional records, i guess i could say some honorable mentions would be peter wolf crier (inter-be), yeasayer (odd blood), atmosphere (to all my friends/blood makes the blade holy), and stars (the five ghosts). but man, here's to hoping 2011 has some more 'blow my face off' ammo than this. too bad kanye only dropped one record this year, otherwise he'd have all ten of my slots fo sho.

1) Beach House/Teen Dream/Sub-Pop

No other album could possibly come close to the heavy rotation Teen Dream got on my iPod this year. The combination of Victoria Legrand’s lush vocals and dream pop instrumentation is seriously too good to be true. Tracks like the dizzying “Norway,” epic “Zebra” and the surreal “Silver Soul” are twistedly abstract, romantic and damned enchanting.

2) Kanye West/My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy/Def Jam

Love him or hate him, Kanye knows how to get your attention. After a pretty rough couple of years, West came hurdling through the haters with his most epic release to date, dropping My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy as his musical redemption. West proves he’s got power with his sleek beats, addicting hooks and rhymes (seriously, who else can get the masses singing toasts to ‘douchebags’?) and featured partners in crime ranging from Elton John, Jay-Z to Bon Iver.

3) Robyn/Body Talk/Cherry Tree

Released just in time to secure a spot on my top 10 of ’10 list, our favorite Swedish pop princess compiled her Body Talk trilogy into one cohesive album. Body Talk as a cumulative whole, vs. the three separate eps, rivals the greatness that was her breakout self-titled 2008 comeback. Dropping dance party anthems like “Hang With Me,” “Dancehall Queen” and “Indestructible,” girlfriend proves she won’t be dancing on her own any longer.

4) Arcade Fire/The Suburbs/Merge

While we will sadly never again experience the epic greatness of another Funeral, Win Butler and crew made a damned fine attempt with The Suburbs. Blowing away their sophomore release Neon Bible, The Suburbs was one consistently memorable collection of epic instrumentation and overall indie goodness. Tracks such as “Month of May,” “Sprawl II,” “Ready to Start” and “The Suburbs” are undeniable examples of awesomeness.

5) GAYNGS/Relayted/Jagjaguwar

Not such Broken Social Scene has the indie music scene witnessed such a superhero line-up. The debut release from Midwesterners GAYNGS, Relayted is such an irresistible compilation of sleek, synth heavy, 80’s throwback baby making music that George Michael was pretty much forced into retirement. Who knew the dudes from Bon Iver, The Rosebuds and Solid Gold had such a seductive side to ‘em? Burning hot.

6) Phantogram/Eyelid Movies/Barsuk http://goo.gl/cHLwl

The majority of male/female duos are shiny, happy pop music. (See YACHT, Mates of State, Matt & Kim, etc). Phantogram is not one of those bands. Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter make musical love into mystery, driven with their synth and bass driven melodies and gaspy, seductive shared vocals. Eyelid Movies is eleven tracks of electronic indie dance bliss.

7) Gorillaz/Plastic Beach/Virgin

Anything Damon Albarn touches turns to gold (or at least it should). Even after just releasing the greatness that is Plastic Beach in 2010, Albarn has already announced his intentions of a follow-up album, which was recorded on their current tour—on an iPad. Not sure how he’ll get guest artists like Snoop Dogg and Lou Reed onboard with this current method, but by now I’m pretty sure whatever Albarn’s got up his sleeve is destined for greatness.

8) Vampire Weekend/Contra/XL Recordings

Who knew some random Polaroid photo from the 80’s would blow up into the biggest indie lawsuit of the year? Luckily for the gentlemen of Vampire Weekend, it turns out there’s much more to Contra than their obscure album art. Tracks like “Giving up the Gun,” “Cousins” and “Holiday” are just a few of the album’s upbeat pop ditties, proving these prep rockers are more than a one album success act.

9) LCD Soundsystem/This is Happening/DFA

James Murphy is a pretty righteous dude. This is Happening was one of the year’s biggest hypes, and if you’ve listened to the record, you’ll see why. “You Wanted a Hit,” “Dance Yrself Clean” and “Home” are several exemplifications of how Murphy and co. have raised the bar on electro-indie bangers once again.

10) Caribou/ Swim/Merge

Daniel Snaith is a mathematician by trade, but he’s better known to the masses as the indie electro composer Caribou. Swim is his best release to date, bursting with formulaic layers of samples, reverb, synth, bass and whatever other magical components he throws into the mix. Impossible to stand still while listening to, this album is consistently mind bending from start to finish.

GAYNGS : the last prom on earth (in chicago).

Decked out in white suit jackets, plastic shades, hoodies, matching beards and even a raccoon skin cap, GAYNGS initiated the windy city Thursday evening with their debut Chicago performance at the Metro. What the venue lacked in attendees, (it was shockingly far from sold out), the Midwestern indie super group made up for with their swagger and incredible loverboy stage presence. With a line-up more impressive than Pitchfork Music Festival, GAYNGS’ rotating roster includes members of Bon Iver, Megafaun, The Rosebuds, Doomtree, Solid Gold, Andrew Bird and more. So while it was no surprise that all 25 members couldn’t rep on stage, POS and Dessa of hip hop collaborative Doomtree and Grant Cutler and Maggie Morrison of the recently defunct electro pop outfit Lookbook were disappointingly noticeably absent.

Taking the stage around the ten o clock mark, the whitest dudes responsible for the biggest influx of hipster baby making wasted no time in getting down to business. Kicking things off with Relayted’s sexy beat-box opener “The Gaudy Side of Town,” it became clear the night was going to be one for the books. The ten man crew transported the crowd into a sexy surreal world of 80’s electro synth throwback make-out jams that would have made even George Michael jealous. Blue, fuchsia and golden hues illuminated the bedroom party ambience, and it was unclear if it was Justin Vernon and Co. or the crowd who were enjoying themselves more. With all the swaying, finger pointing, gayng sign throwing and lazy smiles being tossed around, everyone in the building was helpless to the seductive hypnosis that seeped from the indie R&B jams. While the entire track list of Relayted was accounted for, joints like “Faded High,” “Spanish Platinum” and “The Last Prom on Earth” really stood out.

While the autotune was on the brink of ‘ok dudes, that’s enough,’ the ever charismatic Vernon (you guys, he had his prescription glasses on under plastic red sunglasses, a polo cardigan and a raccoon tail hat and still pulled it off – how much more stinkin’ adorable can you get??) managed to pull it off with his Wrigley Field cracks and never ending grin. The sound quality of Ivan Howard and Mike Noyce’s vocals was dead on and the overall instrumentation was pretty fantastic considering all the sounds erupting from such a small platform. Closing off the night was the encore cover of The Alan Parsons Project “Eye in the Sky, a fantastically intimate and melodic jam that had the entire crowd swaying in unison. It was the perfect one night stand, full of dancing, hot passion and zero regrets.

9/30/10 : chicago's initiation.

as we all know, i'm pretty fond of justin vernon. bon iver was my SHIT in pretty much all 2008 & 2009 (and then most of 2010, cuz let's face it, i'm a sap). doomtree? i got nothing but maaaaad props for my minneapolis hip hop. p.o.s., dessa, damn. and as magical as andrew bird is, he prob wouldn't be half as incredible without his back-up band. and while the dudes from solid gold are a bit on the overdoing it cheesey side, i can't deny they got mad guitar/synth sex appeal. so what am i getting at? throw in a tad of falsetto, a fistful of r&b, slinky guitars, sexy synth, some indie rock and a whole lotta creative midwestern collaborating musicians, and you'll walk away with the ultimate supergroup mega music collective. aka: GAYNGS.

if any of you have been following my unpolished rambles throughout the past year or so, you've noticed i've given a good chunk of attention and mad props to what my fellow midwestern minnesotan/sconsinites have produced when they busted out earlier this year with their debut effort RELAYTED. shit's awesome. 'the gaudy side of town' and 'faded high' make me wish i was in the 80's, sexing it up and snorting coke off some yacht rock dude with bad hair's chest. (well, not quite). but it's sexy. and it's hip. and it's fucking authentic, swear to god, gimmickless talent. and guess what chicago, while all 23 band members of this outfit have regular 9-5 musical obligations, they're getting together long enough for a tour. and yes, my beloved windy city music afficianados, you yerselves get a chance to partake in the gayng bang of 2010.

mark yer calendars now, metro, chicago, september 30th, 2010. for a mere $21 fucking dollars (seriously, people so cheap for what it is i cant believe it), you can witness magic unfold first hand. i've seen more than 50% of these members perform individually in said 9-5's and i wasn't disappointed with any of them. so together? fuck man, i can't wait to attend 'the last prom on earth.'

men i want to date : justin vernon

omg. no idea why i haven't thought of mr. vernon sooner for this post. there are probably 1,000 reasons i could come up with easily why i wanna date him, but this quote alone makes me wanna DIE inside. (from this amazing pitchfork interview with the best news i've read in my LIFE). "I'm just living in Eau Claire, not really leaving for much. I go to the farmers market, go to the studio, go home and play with my cats. I don't know if I've ever been this happy, which is really awesome." ya'll know how i feel bout cats. and sconsin's my stomping grounds. droooooooling.

reasons why i wanna date justin vernon

1. i know he's a hopeless romantic, cuz let's face it, if he wrote 'for emma forever ago' broken hearted, imagine what he must feel at the heights of a romance. HOLY SHIT.
2. he's a wisconsinite. i'm a wisconsinite. we could just eat cheese curds and drink leinenkugel's and spotted cow. i would move back to my home state for him.
3. his falsetto pipes get my girly feminine side all in a tizzy.
4. i could hang out with GAYNGS on the weekend. hey p.o.s, dessa, WHAT'S UP?
5. did you read that quote above? HE LIKES AND HAS CATS!!! (any dude with kitties is def a winner in my book.)
6. if we dated, i wouldn't feel so sad/depressed when i listen to 'for emma forever ago' anymore.
7. he's really adorable, in that skinny, dirty, midwestern kinda way. i don't wanna date no boys prettier than me.
8. HE COULD INTRODUCE ME TO KANYE WEST, DUHHHHHHH.
9. we could sing 'your love' together after getting crunk on some IPA's.
10. i would probably be the happiest girl in the world with him ever. jodihasahugecrush.com

gayngs : venus edition.

GAYNGS

Relayted (Jagjaguwar)
By Jodi Root

If I had been asked to come up with a three-word review of Midwest’s indie super group GAYNGS’ debut album Relayted, it’d be simple: sexy bedroom beats. With a lineup more buzzworthy than a Pitchfork festival, GAYNGS’ long anticipated effort—led by Ryan Olson and Solid Gold members Zack Coulter and Adam Hurlburt—has enlisted the help of Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon and Mike Noyce, Doomtree Darlings P.O.S. and Dessa, the Rosebuds’ Ivan Howard, and Joe Westerlund, Brad Cook, and Phil Cook from Megafaun—and that’s just to name a few.

Starting as a simple side project of sexy synthed, guitar heavy melodies inspired by 10cc’s “I’m Not in Love,” GAYNGS soon evolved into a musical wet dream that seduced all who heard the rough cut of album opener “The Gaudy Side of Town” to beg for their own initiation. This opening track is one of eleven chapters in this musical romance novella, coming off like a guiltlessly hipper modern version of George Michael’s “Careless Whisper.” Totally synthed and sexed up, the seven minute gem grasps the listener with its sleek beatboxing, falsetto harmonies, smooth guitars, and haunting rhythms.

“Faded High” is another stand-out with a drugged-up hybrid of keys, smooth guitars, airy vocals, and electronic percussion. Seductively propositioning, “I want your body on me,” this jam will no doubt be responsible for an influx of unplanned hipster pregnancies. Relayted is an unexpected R&B triumph, the type of album that gets you all hot and bothered, leaving you tossing and turning in the night, wishing and hoping for inclusion, preferably in the form of an invite to “The Last Prom on Earth.”
