If I had been asked to come up with a three-word review of Midwest’s indie super group GAYNGS’ debut album Relayted, it’d be simple: sexy bedroom beats. With a lineup more buzzworthy than a Pitchfork festival, GAYNGS’ long anticipated effort—led by Ryan Olson and Solid Gold members Zack Coulter and Adam Hurlburt—has enlisted the help of Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon and Mike Noyce, Doomtree Darlings P.O.S. and Dessa, the Rosebuds’ Ivan Howard, and Joe Westerlund, Brad Cook, and Phil Cook from Megafaun—and that’s just to name a few.
Starting as a simple side project of sexy synthed, guitar heavy melodies inspired by 10cc’s “I’m Not in Love,” GAYNGS soon evolved into a musical wet dream that seduced all who heard the rough cut of album opener “The Gaudy Side of Town” to beg for their own initiation. This opening track is one of eleven chapters in this musical romance novella, coming off like a guiltlessly hipper modern version of George Michael’s “Careless Whisper.” Totally synthed and sexed up, the seven minute gem grasps the listener with its sleek beatboxing, falsetto harmonies, smooth guitars, and haunting rhythms.
“Faded High” is another stand-out with a drugged-up hybrid of keys, smooth guitars, airy vocals, and electronic percussion. Seductively propositioning, “I want your body on me,” this jam will no doubt be responsible for an influx of unplanned hipster pregnancies. Relayted is an unexpected R&B triumph, the type of album that gets you all hot and bothered, leaving you tossing and turning in the night, wishing and hoping for inclusion, preferably in the form of an invite to “The Last Prom on Earth.”
