hey, punkOFF!
oh boi. i had it all wrong. back in 2004 i thought i was so hardcore and badass b/c i was the 3rd ever female host of uw-oshkosh's punk centric program on its' 25 year running history on WRST fm. i wasn't. i didn't have the slightest clue about "punk rock" and i'm pretty certain i still don't. i played the rules alright, though. the prisoners in the nearby sex offender max security lockdown unit adored me, and repeatedly told me so with illustrations, love letters, deep poetry and numerous requests for black flag, dead milkmen and sometimes ozzy (which i never played - i usually handed these requests off to megahurtz, punk off's sister show which focused mostly, on, well duh, metal). i proudly tacked up the drawings of bloody human hearts with my moniker "jodifer" plasted across. i read the poetry aloud, my fave will always remain "the life inside", which was deep and described "the joint".
i had a lot of fun. it was kind of like make believe. like, let's make believe i'm punk rock. really, i just got the shift bc the prior host got booted from bringing friends up who cussed too much and got caught with a cooler of beer. i was the only willing to work sunday 10-12, but it beat my prior shift, she-ra showdown (all female format - girrrrl power, what what) which was 12-2 am. but yeah. this was really my "emo" phase. saves the day. motion city sucktrack. whatever. i was just diggin in some old docs and found an old playlist, hand scribbled with my songs. some are embarrassingly wretched. some aren't. what brought on this trip down memory lane is when my itunes switched onto the 1995 classic album, jawbreaker's "bivouac". dudes, this album rules. my faux punk roots may be long behind me, but this album is essential to any music lover's collection. it epitimizes what is so right about the punk genre, and i cant really pin it down, to be honest, i have no other jawbreaker releases - but im feeling i really dont need any. this album sums it all up. it's good fucking shit.
but in case you wanna laugh at me, here's my punkoff music log from march 22nd, 2004 - written exactly as logged:

hey u.s. postal service, hurry yer shit up
so i've been trying to be concious of my spending habits. pinch pennies, here and thurr. no lip gloss. no pizza (well, less pizza). turning down bar invites. you know, being smart. staying in bed, reading. lugging 30 packs of $11.99 pbr home from the cardinal vs. wicker park outings. whatever. i feel like even though i've got vaca in a week quickly approaching, i deserved a treat for myself. just cuz, whatever.
so sat night i bought me some movies. not just any movies, mind you, but classic children's stories. movies i grew up with as a wee tyke and have instilled important life morals/themes. my mom didn't show me any of those faggy disney cartoons, mind you. she just gave the screaming mullet kid what she wanted. and what i wanted was greasy fried chicken, bags of candy, and horror films. so in honor of lil jodi and of my mom, i visited ole amazon.com and picked up the masters of horror: poltergiest (CAROL ANNE!), stephen king's cat's eye (THAT LIL TROLL JESTER DOLL RULEZ MA LYFE - and gets owned in a fan by the police 'every breath you take' - pure cinematic genius), basket case AND basket case 2. (cuz you know, half lumpy creatures that rape ladies and control their siamese twin pretty much deserve to rule the world).
NOW THAT POST MAN NEEDS TO HURRY HIS ASS UP AND MAKE MY LIFE WORTH LIVING.
that is all.

nasdaq :: ass crack
only big boi can get away with such a rhyme. it certainly doesn't hurt that he's backing up the lovely androgynous funk soul pop songstress janelle monae, though. her new single "tightrope," which is the first single released from her forthcoming debut full release, archanchroid - due to drop this spring, is undeniably catchy and addicting. i fell in love with this pompador sporting vintage pint-sized r&b diva last year at sxsw, where i caught her OWNING both the fader fort and the rolling stone party. bitch body surfed, boogied unrelentlessly and wailed in her hand-held mic. first show in eons where i picked up a disc legally, supporting the artist straight at the merch stand and pickd up her ep 'metropolis: the chase suite'. girl croons, has got some unspoken oddball obsession with robots and space, and has got plenty of all-star pals (hellloooo outkast) to back up her beats with plenty of bass thumping, guitar wailing and futuristic production. girl just wants to have fun. i know i'ma catch her live set when she rocks 2 consecutive nights at schuba's on 3/29 and 3/30. tix are only 15 bones, shit will be a weird ass dance party.

2010 :: the year jodi achieves her dreams?
probz not, but it ain't off to that bad of a 1st quarter. while i may just eventually be trading my last bland carurrrr in for another bland carurrrr with less pay, that layoff action last month was prob the best thing to happen to me. for a variety of reasons. several which i've previously disclosed and several of which i never will - b/c we all know the results of airing dirty laundry out in the open.
but the reason i'm gonna focus on right now is this: losing my job forced me to open up my eyes and at least attempt to pursue something i'm passionate about. that something: writing. writing writing and also music writing. yes, i've been at the muzzle o' bees thang for about 2 years now which i love love love. . . but i gotta get the jodiroot brand out there. spread the ramblings. poison the pitchfork prestige plague. git er done.
i don't want to get too ahead of myself and jinx it, but i received 4 (nonpaid but who gives a fuck) freelance assignments today from a chicago music site and i've got a tentative pitch in the works with a mag with national publication. both site/publications would have me contribute to music - previews, interviews and reviews and would get my name out there and have peeps read my shit.
this kind of makes me really excited. but just a little bit. (ok, or a lot).
i also have a phone interview for a boring job job wednesday afternoon.
and sxsw is a mere 9 days away. sunshine, beers, girls, bats and beats. it's gonna be a good march. i just know it. on the plus plus side, i just took a picture on my camera phone of my cat wearing my stocking cap and sunglasses. this also gets me pretty effing giddy.

love is all - two thousand & ten injuries
It’s no secret that Swedes do it better. While I may not know too much of the traditional Swedish culture, their music scene is insanely ahead of the indie curve, leading the international pop craze left and right. (See: The Knife. Annie. Peter Bjorn and John. Shout Out Louds. Fever Ray. Robyn. Etc. So really, there's no surprise that I'm really digging on the new Love is All record, Two Thousand & Ten Injuries, which find's its Polyvinyl Records debut release on March 23rd.
This is the third of this Swedish eclectic indie pop outfit's discography, and while I was an above average fan of '06's Nine Times that Same Song and'08's A Hundred Things Keep Me Up at Night, I wasn't expecting anything different from the new album. If you've followed this troupe, you'll get what I'm saying: they deliver consistent, upbeat and scattered pop tracks - delivered atop fast guitar work, traditional percussion, crazed out synth and jazzy sax breakdowns, led by the childlike, shouting and sometimes difficult to comprehend lyrical styles of Josephine Olausson. While their content is all enjoyable, it doesn't tend to stick out apart from their past releases. It's a successful formula, but once you've got one album, you've basically got them all. Or so I thought.
There's something about Two Thousand & Ten Injuries, however, that disproves this theory. I can't quite put my finger on it, but the tracks are more tightly packaged and there seems to be a sense that as the album progresses, the band is getting closer to some musical destination on an overdue adventurous road trip.
The album kicks off with the delectably catchy, "Bigger and Bolder," proving this album to be exactly that with its melodic, fast paced and dizzy tempo. Additional highlights on this collection include the self-depreciative "Early Warnings," which Olausson shares the typical bad day routine we've all encountered at one time or another ("Straight out of bed, I smash my head on the book shelf,") topped with sax and melodies that almost make you want to have a bad day if it can sound this fun. The single "Kungen" is an addicting number clocking in just under three minutes, packed full of "bah-bah-bah-bah-bah's," driven by percussion, backed up by a steady bass line and topped with the signature chaotic sax/thrashtastic guitar breakdown. Perhaps the most standout track of the album is the closing number, "Take Your Time." a step away from the traditional Love is All pop craze, this song slows it down with a dusty marimba/key musical bed, with a fuzzed out, yet delicate, Olausson sadly and distortedly speak-singing minimal lyrics. The track is a synth pop lullaby, perfectly concluding an otherwise energetic, unforgettable third effort from this quintet.
Love is All proves their eclectic pop formula to once again be successful, while still managing to step it up a notch, with a mere twelve tracks clocking in under 35 minutes--I guess if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
with my naked eye i saw
oh, lucious jackson. how you and your sugary alt-fem goodness still strike a chord in my once teenage angsty heart. listening to this now extinct trio's 96 hit, "naked eye," i'm instantly taken back to the days of 16 yr-old hood. ten years later, i'm no longer chugging along in my 93 red ford tempo. not quite sporting rainbow striped camisoles and pink braless halter tops or baggy, string tied brown cargo pants. vans skater sneaks, no longer. the days of pink/purple hair are no more. but this song still brings a smile to my face and will force me to never forget my adventures with white mascara and dark blue lipstick. my purple/blue fuzzy steering wheel cover and hello kitty floormats. slinging pizzas and pitchers of pepsi at my afterschool job. glitter eyeshadow and feeble attempts at skateboarding. the track is almost like a time machine, zinging me back into my days of naive innocence, where my biggest beef was when liana smith had the same pair of brown pants from maurice's or that girl from juda wore the same dress as me in prom. how i would love to transport back to the summer of the mid-to-late 90's. even if only for more of some lucisous jackson. . . .

a creepy walk home.
there's this song by this swedish group of electronic producers, i wanna say they call themselves the teddybears or something like that, something bear, anyway. the song features neneh cherry (eagle eye's sis, ala buffalo stance fame), and is called 'yours to keep.' it's really upbeat, catchy and sugary fun. i remember walking one day to the brown line from my old apartment on damen/foster, strolling past winnemac park with this song playing on my ipod. and suddenly, for no reason really whatsoever, getting uncontrollably freaked out. i got a vivid image in my head and idea that there was danger, or trouble. there wasn't of course, it was around 3:00 pm on a sunny weekend afternoon. but in my head, i imagined a rickety, white beat up van. and a young, pretty girl, maybe in her early-to mid-20's, such as myself, gleefully strolling in the park, listening to this same song. carefree, happy, no guard. just strolling, in the sunshine, on her way to wherever she needed to be, humming along to this pop gem.
then the man opens the sliding van door. grabs her blindsighted and jerks her left arm into the van. drags her body in the back. some cynical, dark, unspeakable evil. the image ends there, but i often think about it. remind myself, keep your guard up kiddo, you live in the city. you could get mugged, raped, beaten, killed. it doesn't matter what neighborhood you're in or how confident you are. this shit is real.
last night i was walking home after having some drinks. i walked through winnemac park on the clear, icy, concrete paths which were carved in a patch of snow. just my regular walk home from andersonville. listening to the decemberists' "16 military wives," a pretty upbeat quirky track. and then i got kinda freaked out again. swore i saw a shadow behind me. felt as if i was for sure being followed. but everytime i would turn around, trying to steal a glimpse behind me, i'd feel this tense, cinematic-esque feeling of dread you get in all the cliche horror films. the protagonist feels the danger, but can never see it. that kind of thing. "calm down jodi, you've had a bunch of beers. you're being paranoid. butt. . . it is dark and you are alone. so just get home as fast as you can."
but the whole walk home, i was straight up trippin. totally convinced i was being followed. even when i got to my apartment back stairs and was more than halfway up to my apt, i was overcome with this sudden certainty of dread, that my predator would appear in my back parking lot and race up the stairs with non-human speed, almost twin peaks-kinda creeepy, and get me before i could dig out my keys.
this of course, didn't happen. but it might be good inspiration for working on that new piece of fiction i've been turning over in my head. we'll see. . .

konichiwa, bitches
bah! exxxcited! just read this p4k article which confirms that swede pop superstar goddess robyn is releasing, not one, not two, but THREE albums in 2010. this makes me incredibly ecstatic, as anyone who knew me in 08 knows that this was MY album of the decade, fucking robyn. seriously. dance party extreme. totally lame, guiltless campy pop. taking me back to the roller rink in 6/7th grades, speed skatin to the likes of "show me love" or "do you know what it takes", bitch brought it back in 05 with the initial swedish release of her self titled work which got official release in the states three years later. SERIOUSLY. this shit's exciting. i already checked her leaked collab with diplo, "dance hall queen," and there's gotta be at least another handful of traxx equally dance worthy. shit will be bananas.
2010: the year jodi got her groove back.

dreams : dissected
when i was probably 20 or so, there was a year long period where i got really into the whole palm reading/tarot cards/dream analyzation trend. it was all in all pretty cliche and commercialized, i picked up all my "kits" and books from the borders' sales racks, but it killed the time and usually got people to talk to me about their personal secrets. so it was interesting, to say the least.
i haven't read one of my de-stressing analytical hippie jargon books in quite some time. i kind of wish i remembered how to do all that shit. or maybe i don't. last night i certainly had a string of interesting dreams. typically, when i wake up, especially after a night of drinking, i can't remember a single dream. but last night/this morning, i was more than relieved to be awoken at 9:30 by a friend's text message. it was one of those dreams where i knew i could wake up at any time, but it was like watching a movie. i wanted to find out the ending. except, this movie was about my life.
i only remember two in clear enough detail to ramble about here, but the first one, albeit very brief, had something to do with president obama resigning his position. he didn't feel he was "up for the role" and was disappointed in his progress/lack thereof. now, see this is strange to me. because i'm admittedly one of the most politically apathetic sonsofbitches you'll meet. while i appreciate jon stewart, i think the daily show is boring, mostly b/c i'm so out of tune with our nation's going-ons, that i don't get the jokes or know what he's talking about. i'm not passionate about the economy or healthcare, even though i'm currently being affected myself. i don't give a shit about national speeches or new laws, the only halfway political theme i've followed in the past few years is the whole gay-marriage ban. proposition 8. awesome. so we're at a place in time where everything is instantly gratified online, american idol is the biggest news maker, and animals are toilet trained. but gays getting married! NO WAY I DON'T WANT ANY HOMOS RUBBING OFF ON ME!!! jesus christ. talk about prehistoric. but whatever, now i'm too tired to even pay attention to any progress there. i'll vote when i need to, don't get me wrong. but politics bore me. end of story.
so to have a dream where the president up right quits? if this ever came true, i'd probably find out two days later on perez hilton. that's how out of touch i am with things. but the dream was more of an afterthought. i think i was at a bar, maybe even big joe's, where i was last night. and the tv ran a story about obama's resignation. and all the hick townies were hootin' and hollerin', calling him derogatory racial slurs, good riddance'in, etc. i remember feeling a slight pit of disappointment, but then nonchallantly ordering another pitcher of beer.
that was dream one. rad, right?if i were to take a stab at deciphering that one now, i'd prob credit it to something to do with my unemployment status and how i'm now another statistic, number in the nation's census. just another figure affected by our current financial crisis, state of ruin. but then again, maybe it was just b/c i was drunk when i passed out. who knows.
transition to dream two. this is where shit got weird.
anybody who's known me for a bit is probably aware of my daddy story, or lack thereof i guess you could say. so i don't completely bore everyone with the whole lifetime original tale now, i'll give the condensed version. i grew up with a single mom. no dad. no questions about dad allowed. not until i turned 18. week before 18th bday/highschool graduation, mom gets letter in mail from "dad." he found out about me. met me. made me take a paternity test. turned negative. "mom what the H?" "it's him. faulty test, better off without hinm in your life." five years later, father's day. on couch in living room in chicago. log onto myspace. get a msg from "dad" asking if i'm "jodi robin root from argyle". what the fuck. long story short, 2nd paternity test - negative again. "mom what the fuck?" "i don't know what to tell you, jodi." one time i got her drunk and she confessed that it could have been "the short blonde guy." i'm taller than my mother and half-brother. i'm not blonde. i don't know how that could work out. basically, whatever. mom didn't have an abortion. she partied a lot but still kept me and raised me alright. i'm ok with this. but do i have questions? good god, yes. i don't intend on ever having my own family, but who knows, maybe someday i will. at that point i'd like to know my family health history. i'd like to know my heritage. as gratifying as checking "white/caucasian" on all personal paperwork is, i'd like to know where the fuck my genes come from. have i ever boned a cousin/brother? that'd be hella creepy. do i have siblings? aunts/uncles/grandparents? maybe, probably. but i'll never know them.
the second paternity test was now 3-4 years ago. i've pretty much moved on and dont think about it. i mean, what's the point? but this dream really got me thinking again. . .
in my dream i had found out somehow, that my father was alive and did know about me. his name was "andy" or "andrew". he was french. i was half french. when i'd ask my mom she'd get extremely upset and curse him. i had to go through my brother, who was 14 around the time of my conception, and get details from him regarding her ex-bf at the time. he wasn't a fan either, but introduced me to the dude's sister, my aunt. she resembled a frizzy haired, creepy, haggard witch kind of woman who wore way too much cheap eyeliner. "your dad's dead." she coughed. "drug overdose." so here i was, with a newfound father, but he had died after all. and i was french. and my mom was so angered she wouldn't speak to me.
i don't get it. the dream itself - why i was subconsciously thinking about the father issue, and how the hell my dreamworld linked me to being a frenchie. if i had to guess by looking at myself, i'd say it's pretty clear i'm irish/german. my mom has a bit of both in her blood, as well as english heritage and a smidgeon of pennsylvanian dutch which i'm way too embarrassed to ever admit out loud (penn dutch = ammish. sick, right?) strange how i'll gleefly brag/boast my connection to serial killer ed gein and how he fed my mom's first cousins "venison" and "hamburger" when he would babysit them regularly. but the idea of me being related to a crusty sick ammish person leaves me dry heaving. the horror. . .
as i lay here in bed, i'm regretting falling asleep last night period. the daddy dream left me a bit shook up and unsettled, even though obviously it changes nothing. but the unanswered questions have yet again, surfaced into my thinking. and i wish my mom would just talk to me. tell me, straight up and admit it. i know she was doing a lot of drugs. i know her lifestyle wasn't conventional. i've figured it out that i'm a result of an unprotected one night stand. i just wish she could tell me that. i've certainly had my share of one night affairs in which pregnancy would obviously fuck up everything - but i find it so hard to believe that she is unable to track down the sperm donor even enough to recollect what he looks like. or where she met him. names, i can't even tell you the last 20 dudes i've kissed, so i get that, but . . . man.
so i guess i'm glad i can't analyze this dream. cuz it would probably just really bum me out. but the tarot cards. . . that could be amusing. maybe it's time to revisit my local border's. rack up some income being a crazy with a crystal ball on the cta.
i'll be dead wrong and you'll be just fine
while lying in bed, cursing myself for the prior night's binger, i couldn't move. couldn't muscle the energy to slip on a t-shirt or brush my film plastered teeth. my arm was sticky. hair, its typical rat's nest. needed food. badly. but couldn't justify forking over the twenty bones for pizza delivery unless it was shared. all my other peeps were equally uninterested in leaving their respective hungover bed zones, so i decided to text my ex-bf in hopes of splitting a pizza since he lives the closest to me. instead of accepting said pizza offer, however, he offered me up a free ticket to check cursive/alkaline trio at their sold out set at the metro.
really? i thought. i didn't know how to respond. i mean, man. i have some memories of my alk 3 days. back in the summer of 2001, when i first moved out of my mom's house and into my first very own place, what they called 'Bates Motel', (complete with neon hotel sign, yes), in the woodsy back parking lot of tommy bartlett in the dells. with its rape me wooden path, spider infestation, gravel driveway hidden by trees, this was probably the coolest place i ever lived in. sure, my roommate was a fat, spoiled slob who i despised. alyssa, *shudder*. but, the vintage greasy spoon like booth for the kitchen table, 70's floral design curtains and creepy novelty of the joint was pretty radical. the raccoons knocked our garbage cans over on a nightly basis. deer often trampled down our stairs and would scare the bejusus out of me in the middle of the night, poking their heads against my bedroom window. bunkbed.
i didn't really have any friends that summer. i befriended a pack of finnish girls, but because it was my first year at bartlett's and i worked at robot world (the very bottom of the tbi social ladder, mind you - my climb up the hierarchy to the prestige of ticket seller didn't come until 2002), i pretty much stuck to myself. worked the 8-10 hours, worked part-time at the night ski show selling cotton candy and popcorn whenever they needed my help. would drive my shitty constantly breaking down 93 red ford tempo to madison or home to argyle whenever i had a day off. hang out with my high school friends.
i remember this was a turning point in my life. not yet in college, definitely done with high school. i was an "adult?" i dont' know, not really. i still shopped at hot topic, so i was for sure hella clueless. lots of glittery gummy bracelets and bad music. but this summer also transformed my musical tastes. in the summer of 2001 i spent several hours locked in my shitty bedroom, batting at milipedes and searching for new tunes. i picked up a vagrant records sampler at hot topic for five bucks. it had both alkaline trio and reggie and the full effect on it. i also listened to get up kids' "something to write home about" religiously. i was experimenting in my next pseduo "punk"/emo phase. dashboard confessional, saves the day - they didn't follow until uw-river falls that forthcoming fall semester. that's another story.
but as soon as i heard "thanks for staying," by reggie and "crawl" by alkaline trio - i felt some sort of comfort. knowing, ok, at least i'm not rocking out to o.a.r. and dave matthews like the rest of these college kids pretending to be hippies at their summer jobs. i'm "alternative." just like high school, intentionally separating myself from the pack, lonely and bored. i remember one particular day specifically, where i had driven to the wal-mart in search of some new tunes. i purchased two very significant albums this day - both destiny's child "writings on the wall" and jimmy eat world's "bleed american." so maybe just in the recent year or so, i dusted off "writings on the wall" and guiltlessly admitted my secret love for bills bills bills and say my name, (who can forget bug-aboo or jumpin jumpin? even at age 18, i kept my d.c love a secret and scoffed whenever they played them on mtv or the radio, secretly tapping my foot and getting my inner girl groove on). but jimmy eat world? goddamn. sure, they played the death out of the middle and sweetness kind of pissed me off a bit too, but praise chorus? the self titled track? fuck, even now, some 9 years later, when i hear "hear you me" start to strum on my ipod, i'm instantly back on that carpeted linty floor, leaning on the red iron bars of my bunk bed, wallowing in self-pity and wishing for my life to begin. sad. but still listening anyway. i was sooooo deep.
kidding aside, those albums, (aside from d.c), marked the beginning of my journey to where i am today as a music critic/fan/whatever. i hadn't ever listened to anything like alk 3 before, and it was something i had discovered on my own, without the influence of magazines, television or a friend's word of mouth. no social networking, internet obsession, blogosphere then like there is today. back then i had to pay $.50/minute to surf the web at the internet cafe. hella lame. no wireless then. . .
so fast forward nine years. no longer at bates motel, but now in my real grown-up apartment in chicago. Was i even interested in alk 3 anymore? could it even be amusing for a novelty nostalgia trip? hell if i knew, there last few albums sucked pretty hardcore and i didnt think i could pretend to get into it and didn't want to be lousy company for mike. but he needed a companion and was offering the ticket for free. hadn't hung in a while, and what the hell else do i have to do with my time these days? being unemployed is so strange. no concept of days/time, etc. just laying around half naked in my butterfly robe my sister in law gave me when i was 12. playing online. drinking coffee. not being constructive. so yes, even though i was hung over and in a great deal of self-induced discomfort, i decided i had nothing to lose to accept the tik to the metro.
picked up a frozen pizza, a few brews and strolled across the park to mike's apartment. we made it to the show just as cursive opened up with "from the hips." cursive delivered a somewhat dry set. i dont' know, like i was telling mike, i have a love/hate relationship with cursive. they have the potential/talent/capability to blow my freaking mind and some of their past performances have topped my concert going experiences (sxsw last year for sure), but other times they just piss me off and drag their shit on forever with old material and lackluster energy. never any banter, which is fine as long as you are offering up a mind blowing performance instead, but nope. last nite it wasn't horrible, but there was def something missing. maybe it was the fact they were playing a 6:30 pm all ages show for a bunch of kids who weren't even born when alk 3 released maybe i'll set fire. fuck, the dudes from cursive are prob old enough to be some of those kids' grandfathers. i can see how thatd' be hard to rock it out.
next thing i know it's 8:30 and trio takes the stage. they open up with their new single from their new album, "this addiction." i could. not. stop. laughing. i turned to mike and was like, 'wow, genius lyrics here." something along the lines of repeating THIS AD-DIC-TIOOOOOOON with formulic power pop riffs. but soon enough, i quit laughing and just started smiling, bobbing along in recognition to a good chunk of my younger years. it seemed like they damn near played 'from here to infirmiry' in completion, which was my summer of 2001 go-to album. transported to bates, warped tour, being a lil young'in. they played private eye, stupid kid, armageddon and my fave, crawl. their drummer was insane. he made going apeshit crazy appear effortless on that drumkit. i was impressed. the sound was tight, the crowd - hilarious, and this was the first show where i witnessed crowd-surfing and the cliche energetic devil's horn hand gestures getting tossed around in probably 8 years. dudes def knew their fanbase and how to work them. they even closed with "radio." i found myself getting bored probably halfway through their set, but all in all, i was pleasantly surprised to find myself enjoying the performance. i'd turn to mike every other song, "is this that counting song?" "this one's from good mourning, right?" "did they just say satan? no, sadie? oh yeah thats the charles manson song right?" he would just smile and pat my shoulder. i felt like a 3-year old. but at the same time, still remembered every single goddamn word.
post-show, (10:00 PM - way past kiddies' bedtime), we headed to big joe's to shoot the shit over a pitcher or two of pbr. decent night, decent time. total trip down yesterday lane. both musically and company wise. mike reminded me how i brought him to the goddamnit tour in milwaukee for his bday in 2005. i totally forgot about that. turns out there was a lot i had forgotten. but infrequent surprising reminders are definitely more than welcome. i hadn't revisited bates motel in quite some time. . . .
so here's to you, mr. skiba and crew - thanks for making me remember who i was and how i got to be here in the now as the miss jodi robin root i am today. i will gladly shout along to "dogs shitting razor blades" in your honor anytime. but as far as the hot topic gear goes, i think i'll pass.
