hey, punkOFF!
oh boi. i had it all wrong. back in 2004 i thought i was so hardcore and badass b/c i was the 3rd ever female host of uw-oshkosh's punk centric program on its' 25 year running history on WRST fm. i wasn't. i didn't have the slightest clue about "punk rock" and i'm pretty certain i still don't. i played the rules alright, though. the prisoners in the nearby sex offender max security lockdown unit adored me, and repeatedly told me so with illustrations, love letters, deep poetry and numerous requests for black flag, dead milkmen and sometimes ozzy (which i never played - i usually handed these requests off to megahurtz, punk off's sister show which focused mostly, on, well duh, metal). i proudly tacked up the drawings of bloody human hearts with my moniker "jodifer" plasted across. i read the poetry aloud, my fave will always remain "the life inside", which was deep and described "the joint".
i had a lot of fun. it was kind of like make believe. like, let's make believe i'm punk rock. really, i just got the shift bc the prior host got booted from bringing friends up who cussed too much and got caught with a cooler of beer. i was the only willing to work sunday 10-12, but it beat my prior shift, she-ra showdown (all female format - girrrrl power, what what) which was 12-2 am. but yeah. this was really my "emo" phase. saves the day. motion city sucktrack. whatever. i was just diggin in some old docs and found an old playlist, hand scribbled with my songs. some are embarrassingly wretched. some aren't. what brought on this trip down memory lane is when my itunes switched onto the 1995 classic album, jawbreaker's "bivouac". dudes, this album rules. my faux punk roots may be long behind me, but this album is essential to any music lover's collection. it epitimizes what is so right about the punk genre, and i cant really pin it down, to be honest, i have no other jawbreaker releases - but im feeling i really dont need any. this album sums it all up. it's good fucking shit.
