house cleaning : piracy funds terrorism
i have hella cds. 85% of them likely make me cringe, whether it be the content itself or the shitastic condition i kept them in (apparently, flinging discs across your room like a frisbee or stashing on a shelf without a case does not guarantee the disc will play in your stereo next time). but here and there, i will dust off a hidden, long forgotten treasure and will race to convert said jewel onto my disposable itunes library.
two days ago, boys and girls, that hidden something something happened to be m.i.a and diplo's mixtape, pre-arular release, piracy funds terrorism. love her or hate her, this mixtape is an undeniable dance party JAM. shit takes me back to 04, when a young and impressionable jodester was all about finding the newest and hottest shit. my friend seth had burned me this album, back in his days of promoting muzik back at some shitty jazz label. now said dude is the tour manager for gym class heroes and i haven't talked to him in probably 5 years, but the fact that he burnt this album for me, along with introducing me to the knife on a separate compilation, proves that i owe this man tremendously for my musical tastes today.
piracy funds terrorism isn't just another m.i.a. release. this is 21 tracks of pure diplo remix genius. with samples of the bangels, jay-z, salt n pepa, clipse, missy and dead prez, this shit is for realzies off the hook. sure, samples from miss arulpragasm's debut vocal works are the highlights on these beats, but revisiting this compilation just makes me wish she'd head back to her pre-hipster roots and keep her shit simple and dancetastic. she's got a new record due to drop this summer, and she's experienced several visa issues, government oppression/beef - but also motherhood and marriage. so it's hard to say if she'll just whip out the angry victim card or soften the blows with some more dancey chant work. regardless, i'm pretty excited about it, hopefully diplo mixes some of that shit up.
