OK, so this is an extraordinarily long shot. . .
but i got a tip off that p4k is looking for freelance writers. i know i'm not snobby enough or have a large enough pretentious vocab to even be considered, but i'm giving it a shot nonetheless b/c it PAYS. so, one of the criteria is that i have to submit 3-4 of my 'best' pieces. well kids, i've written a lot. and i have no idea what sounds the best. so please please please, if you're bored at an office job, bored at home playing on facebook, or busy but looking for an excuse to procrastinate, i'd SUPER REALLY appreciate your help.
i've attached a variety of links from past articles that i feel half decent about, if you could please email or comment in the posts your fave pieces that you think sound the best or schnazzy, i'd appreciate it. even when the dicks at p4k pass me up, at least i'll feel flattered enough to know that you my luvlies read my words and took the time to give me feedback.
heart you all.

Hey Jodi,
ReplyDeleteHere are my two cents on your best writing:
Basically, i think the best kind of writing--especially music writing--is that which evades the usual laundry list (track list/set list) format, and has some kind of other narrative or hook to push it. The write's voice has to come through in order to connect with the audience, I think. You do this well, and here are my favorites (the four below represent, I think, a diversity in both your publication places and the type of writing that you can do):
1. I love the St. Vincent review on MoB--great personal/casual writing. You can tell not only that you're a fan but that you had a great time at the show. If I wasn't already a fan, I'd definitely want to check her out. That's key, i think.
2. Same thing with the Atmosphere piece. I love the letter format--that's the hook. It gives you an opportunity to do something a bit different and keeps the reader interested. Very cool.
3. Sharon Van Etten in Chicago Interview is a great short piece. Interesting, concise, but still has your voice in there.
4. Yeasayer on Venus gets my last vote. Again, it's a little bit different genre-wise and you get a Pitchfork name drop. Can't hurt.
Hope that helps--good luck. Let me know how it goes. I'd love a freelance gig with them someday too.
Jon Stone (you know, your fellow MoB contributor)
Jodi,
ReplyDeleteI can't give you writing advice, but I read A LOT and am very picky about what I continue reading after the first paragraph. You always keep me interested. Even though I don't know most of the bands you write about, I want to after I read your pieces. You are so talented and make everything you write fun to read. Good luck.
