p4k : day three
annnnnnnd day three was the final day of scorching 90+ degree heat and lots'o'walkin/boozin'/dancin' for this girl. (thank god). i don't know how anyone had energy for after fest shows and parties, i really don't. i'm exhausted now and am even missing my beloved free monday music in the parks as a result. no. more. walking. ever. (or at least until tomorrow).
but alas, the line-up on sunday was ridiculous in the wrong way. too much good shit going on at once. had to zig zag between the a-b-c stage set-ups non stop. but i feel confident i got the most outta my day regardless. saw some really good shit and some surprises too.
walked in just in time to hear (but not see) the last song of best coast's set. bummed i missed it, but i did manage to catch my fave girls' song (laura) and a few others before heading to the b stage to check out washed out's chill, electro new wave shaded jams. dude was small. and cute. and decent soundtrack. something new i had heard and read about, but never actually listened to before and now may look into post fest. had to miss out on local natives unfortunately, in order to catch the awesomeness that was beach house, but i'm ok with that.
beach house was my number 2 looking forward to p4k necessity (after robyn, DUH), and they did not disappoint. all my faves from teen dream were accounted for including 'zebra,' 'silver soul,' 'norway,' 'walk in the park' and many others. i swayed (barefoot, of course), and dug the company of some fellow beach house fans that were all friends of my friends, but never friends before this magical set. i just love when friends become friends. it's just so nice. this was a seriously awesome set, the sound was fantastic and even though miss victoria legrand sported long sleeves, you could tell that she and her fellow guitarist were in full performance mode. alex scally commented on the heat, 'if you don't leave this set with soaking wet underpants, there's something wrong with you.' this statement could have been accurately interpreted in different ways, either you are normal and sweat, or you enjoyed the set so much you ejaculated (which i was close to), or you peed because you couldn't bear to leave the set to go to the porta john. i was almost all 3. my underpants were far from dry, believe me. i still stand behind my statement that teen dream is album of the year. for realz.
i tried to stick around to see what the commotion about l.bolt was, but after about two seconds of loud noisy guitars, i was done and tried to check end of local natives, but failed. the one upside was that after my ears bled to the autrocity of noise that is lightning bolt, was that i managed to catch a bit of surfer blood. got to hear 'twin peaks.' that was cool. then it was off to the lovely annie clark's st vincent set on the c stage. girlfriend was smoking hot in her red little mini dress number and wailed it on her guitar. i knew she wouldn't disappoint and she didn't. love her. zig zagged back to b just in time for a couple of here we go magic's radical set, boogied and bounced again just in time for MAJOR LAZER.
major lazer's albums always kinda of left me puzzled. loud beeps, boops, mash ups, shouting, air horns, obnoxiousness. don't get me wrong, i love lust love anything mr. diplo puts his hands to, but this collaboration just left me feeling like a weird white girl who can't dance. well, get him on stage with a black dude and a screaming yellow mohawk, five booty shaking bitches and ballerinas, a chinese dragon, shit is different. so much booty shaking it was insane. i was shouting. shaking. dancing. my ass was on firrrrre. biggest dance off i've had in years it seemed like. never ever ever pass up a chance to check out these dudes rock a dance party. words can't really describe it, just made me shake my ass unapologetically. plus chinese dragons are really cool.
the unfortunate part about major lazer unexpectedly kicking so much ass was that i missed neon indian. that sucked. but i wasn't down for long b/c as soon as big boi took the stage shit really got real. i've heard from everybody but my mother that his new record is the shit and that i gotta get it asap. i wouldn't know after yesterday b/c 90% of his set was outkast old skool jams. homeboy busted out 'so fresh and so clean,' 'ghetto muzik,' 'i love the way you move,' 'b.o.b,' 'miss jackson' and tons of other shit. it was pretty fucking funny and ironic, (although i am also guilty) to observe the sea of white kids swaying their arms to 'rosa parks'. yeah, push that bus you fucking hipsters. we ain't sitting nowhere near the back. oh wait, we're white. we never had to deal with opression, wait, quit, find the closest black hipster! (sorry, the only two there were with me). funny. but awesome. super good set. when bb busted out 'shutterbug' i got my lesson in ass shaking 101 for the 2nd time in the day. i swear my ass is still sore from all the booty grinding it got done yesterday. (this isn't a bad thing).
i guess sleigh bells were being divas and went on 20+ minutes late. everyone was complaining. this, however, was excellent news for yours truly. i thought i'd miss them after sticking around for big boi's set, but instead i arrived with enough time for 'rill rill (or ring ring via demo version)', 'crown on the ground,' 'a/b machine,' 'my kids,' 'treats' 'rachel' and a few others. i'm pretty sure i caught all but 3 of their songs. thrashing. lots of 'oh-oh-oh' action going on. swirling around in skirts. drinking beers. kick punching the air. you know how i do. good times.
then it was pizza time. and pavement. you know, i respect pavement and stephen malkumus. i can see why they're held to the high classic status that they are, but to be perfectly frank, they kinda made me tired. they opened the set up with 'cut your hair,' which is my fave song of theirs, (and to be honest, the only one i recognize by the title), but i did recognize the next 3-4 numbers. i got to say hi to stv slv and feel cool. i ate my pizza. drank my beer. watched the bright twinkly lights. and then, as my 27 year old tired ass sweaty body recommended, i listened to it and went home. managed to beat the rush and had a fairly painless cta commute home and was in bed by 11:00 pm.
jodi win. p4k 2010, you were a good run. next year, let's turn on the mother nature a/c unit a bit and maybe offer more than heinekens for brew selection, whattya say?
