Combining a dreamy blend of light percussion, folksy melodies and delectable pop vocals, Freelance Whales have arrived just in time for summer. Sure to be the ideal backyard bbq soundtrack, Weathervanes, the debut effort dropped in joint release on both Frenchkiss and Mom + Pop Records, is making quite the impression on college radio charts.
Formed in late 2008, this Queens quintet has been quite busy making a name for themselves, succeeding in nabbing a spot opening for Shout Out Louds in addition to spots with both Sasquatch and Lollapalooza music festivals amidst their following headlining summer tour. Weathervanes is a 14-song whirlwind of instrumentation, straying away from typical pop formulas with their usage of harmonium, banjo, glockenspiel, synthesizers, waterphone, bass, guitars and drums.
If The Postal Service ever traded their synthesizers for banjos, the end result would probably sound something like Freelance Whales, thanks to singer Judah Dadone’s light and airy vocals and the band’s overall optimistic dream pop vibes. Pure and free, Weathervanes is 2010’s feel good record of the year, packed full of tinkering xylophone, soaring vocal harmonies and simple, nostalgic pop melodies.
